8-month-old Maine Coon girl - 8.1 lbs

Hi everyone,

I brought home a lovely Maine Coon (from a very reputable breeder) – she's a tortie blotched tabby and white. I got her when she was 3 months old and she’s now 8 months. I’ve got a few questions about her growth: at 5 months old, she weighed just under 6.6 lbs, and now at 8 months, she’s barely reaching 8.1 lbs.

She’s absolutely adorable, very pretty, super playful, hyperactive and a bit timid (it’s hard to give her a cuddle, she doesn't really like being held! Maybe I’ve played with her too much and didn't get her used to "cuddles" enough).

She hasn't been spayed yet; I’m planning to have her done in her 9th month.

Does anyone have any thoughts on her growth? Is it normal for them to pretty much stop growing as early as 7 or 8 months?

Thanks for your replies and have a lovely evening!

Al

Hi, well yes zanaya is right, the dry and wet food sold in supermarkets, at the vet’s or in pet shops should be avoided. They’re packed with grains and by-products, with far too many carbs and not enough meat for a cat, which is an obligate carnivore. The best thing is a grain-free diet with as much meat as possible – at least 40% in the ingredients – and as few carbs as possible 😁

You should definitely change the dry food, though. Cats are obligate carnivores and can't digest grains; brands like RC are full of them, which is bad for their organs. You ought to go grain-free :) Mind you, she does seem to have a very small build. Hi Zanaya, The Royal Canin Maine Coon dry food and wet pouches were actually highly recommended to me (by both the breeder and the vet). I've just weighed her: 8 lbs... She's even lost a bit of weight compared to last month, even though she's eating normally. It's really making me wonder because her parents as well as her 'aunts' are all quite big (around 11 to 13 lbs for the females).

You really ought to switch the dry food, though.

You should definitely look into grain-free options :)

Mind you, yours looks like quite a small build.

My girl is 8 months old and she's already bigger—she's the black smoke tortie :)

    Hi everyone,

I've just adopted a little 3-month-old Maine Coon kitten. I was wondering what you all feed yours—dry food, wet food, or something else please? I'm feeling a bit lost with all the different diet options... and your Maine Coons are absolutely gorgeous!!!

Ciboulette is about the size of a 6-month-old Domestic Shorthair!

    Hi,

Your cat is gorgeous! It might just be her natural build to be small (after all, some people are tall and others are more slightly built... though I'm not sure if you can really compare cats to humans!)

My moggy is 18 months old and has stayed very small and dainty; she’s just going to stay that way! The vet told me she was perfectly well-proportioned for her size and that it’s just her nature to be like that. She’s in great health!

If your vet hasn't noticed anything unusual, I don't think you have anything to worry about...

    Have a lovely day

    Hi,

She’s on the food recommended and used by her breeder—the usual: Royal Canin Kitten dry food, RC Instinctive wet food pouches, and growth supplements.

She’s very, very pretty, although she’s still relatively small.

    Evening all,

here’s a little growth chart for Maine Coons

Mind you, it’s not 100% accurate

What are you feeding her, and what was she on at the breeder's?
