My cat is constantly licking the end of its nose, so I was wondering if that's normal. Thanks. He's a Birman.

    Hi there,

In what situations does your cat lick its nose?

Is it after eating or drinking?

If that's the case, it isn't necessarily anything to worry about.

However, if there is any discharge from the nose or eyes, it could be a sign of cat flu!

    Is he sneezing at all?

Without seeing him in person, we can’t provide a diagnosis.

If he seems unwell or "off" in any way, don't hesitate to mention it to your vet at your next appointment.

    Have a good day.

    Hi again,

IF there’s no discharge from his nose or eyes, his breathing is quiet, and he isn’t coughing or snoring, then it isn’t cat flu. If he’s eating well, drinking, playing, using his litter tray, responding to you, and doesn’t show any signs of pain when you feel him over, I don’t think he’s poorly. However, if he really is sleeping a lot more than usual and has a tendency to sleep ‘hidden away’ in unusual places, then there is a problem.

    Hi again,

If my cat is sleeping quite a lot but doesn't have a runny nose, could it still be cat flu?

Hi, If he’s doing it after eating, it’s completely normal – there are just tiny bits of food left on his nose. If he’s doing it all the time though, check to see if his nose is running (it could be a sign of cat flu). You should also check that he doesn't have any dental pain which might be making him stick his tongue out as a reflex – try to keep an eye on him while he’s eating.
