White hairs on a black kitten

Hi everyone,

I’ve recently adopted a two-and-a-half-month-old kitten. He’s completely black but has some white hairs scattered throughout his coat. At first, he didn’t have any at all, but as the days go by, more and more are appearing. Some little tufts have even popped up inside his ears. I haven’t managed to see a vet yet to ask about it, so I’m posting here. I was wondering if it could be due to a deficiency in his diet, or perhaps some kind of stress... Or is this just normal for black kittens? Will these scattered white hairs keep increasing and eventually form patches?

The hairs are quite hard to spot on camera, but I’ve attached a few photos anyway ^^

Yeah, all good here! Nabu has a white belly, but my Pap'diouf is solid black! Not a single "Woody Allen" hair in sight! He’s not a Bombay, though, and he’s three times the weight of Ficelle, who really looked like a "moggy" Bombay 😂! As for Nabu, he’s not feral at all anymore and he’s become huge—you’d think he was pregnant! I was worried about wet FIP, but no, all is well, he’s just a bit tubby!

A quote from the show "My Wife and Kids"

It was like Woody Allen at a Black Panthers meeting! 😂

    Hi there,

That’s not a problem at all. In fact, it’s actually quite rare to find a perfectly black cat without any white hairs, like the Bombay for instance.

Same here, mine is getting more and more of them. It’s normal, especially considering his mum and sister were white.

My kitten is 7 months old now; he was black but now he's got loads of white hairs, even under his belly—he's turning white!

MY BLACK CAT ALSO has white hairs in places, it’s nothing serious – their coats can change over time.

My black cat also has a few white hairs scattered on her belly.

She’s also got some white whiskers, and more of them are appearing as she gets older.

It happens with domestic shorthairs, yeah... Not only is it not a sign of poor health, but I find it gives them a little something extra, a touch of charm 😌 My two babies with solid coats (a blue and a black, both domestic shorthairs) have their tiny little tuft of white fur, it's so sweet!

That’s a real relief, thank you so much!

There’s no need to worry at all, it happens quite often and doesn’t have any impact on their health. Legend even says that these cats are lucky charms because they’ve been touched by the hand of God. It likely dates back to the Middle Ages when black cats were sacrificed; if they had any white in their fur, they were spared.

    That’s a lovely belief, thank you ^^
