Using Cicalfate on cat wounds?

Evening all,

My cat has just finished a 10-day course of antibiotics for an abscess on his right eye.

Following the vet's instructions, I took his cone off today, but of course, he immediately started grooming himself and 10 minutes later, one of his wounds started bleeding again 😔

He must have pulled a scab off. I’ve obviously put his cone back on straight away.

I’m just wondering if it’s normal for a cat to heal this slowly (he doesn't have any known health issues) and if a skin repair cream like Cicalfate would be suitable for his wounds?

Thanks

Thank you so much for your message, I've only just seen it 😔

I’m going to follow your advice and contact the vet first thing tomorrow morning!

The wounds look very minor, but I'd rather be on the safe side.

In any case, he seems back to his normal self now :)

Hi there, The first step is to clean the wound near the eye with a compress soaked in water. Don't use any disinfectant, otherwise you risk causing further eye damage (due to toxicity). After that, I'd suggest taking a photo and sending it to your vet so they can let you know if you need to go back for another check-up. Wounds around the eye area can be serious and can lead to the loss of the eye itself, so it's important to be cautious, especially given the recent eye abscess. In the meantime, put their cone back on and trim their claws to prevent any further incidents. Best wishes, Caroline

Thanks so much!! That’s what I ended up doing :)

I’ve applied a bit of local honey to it, fingers crossed it does the trick

    Hi,

Personally, I wouldn't risk it. However, you can put some honey (good quality) on the wounds. There are no contraindications for this effective natural healer, which also has mild antibiotic properties.
