Strange hole on his lip, looks weird

Evening all,

I'm writing because I'm quite concerned about a wound I discovered on my cat while I was back at my parents' house for the holidays. Since I haven't seen him for a few months, I've no idea how long he's been dealing with this...

He has a sort of large hole on his lip, almost as if a chunk of it is missing. It doesn't seem painful to the touch; he's still got a great appetite and his behaviour hasn't changed one bit. The wound is very clean and shows no signs of infection.

I've attached a photo of the injury so you can see for yourselves:

Strange hole on his lip, looks weird

I spoke to an out-of-hours vet over the phone who told me not to worry and that it's likely just an injury from a scrap with another cat (he knows my Louis well, having looked after him since he was a kitten).

I still think I'll take him in next Friday just to be sure it's nothing serious. But in the meantime, I wanted to share this with you all to see if anyone has any similar experiences? And I'll keep you posted on my side as well.

Have a lovely evening

If it makes you feel any better, I do exactly the same thing, except I put some green clay on his chops.

    Hello,

I found a similar issue with my cat this morning; he’s still eating and grooming himself without any trouble though.

We took him straight to the vet anyway, and it turns out it’s apparently inflammation caused by stress (it’s not the first time he’s had stress-related reactions, but never anything like this before).

In his case, it seems to be down to him being very sensitive to stress, which causes his system to overreact.

The vet gave him an antibiotic jab as well as an anti-inflammatory injection to stop it from spreading. We’ve got a follow-up appointment in three weeks to see how it’s clearing up, but it doesn't look like anything serious. It cost us around £60.

Just thought I’d share this here in case it helps anyone else dealing with the same thing!

No worries! If I remember rightly, the treatment is quite pricey. It’s spread over several weeks... especially as you don’t see much progress at first, which can get a bit disheartening after a while. You’ll need plenty of patience and should probably budget for upwards of £100. My cat, Luter, is doing perfectly fine now and his little sore has completely cleared up 😺

    Thanks for the quick reply.

I feel a bit more reassured now; at least it’s treatable.

Could you give me a ballpark figure of the cost I should expect? (Just so I can start putting some money aside.)

I’m going to book an appointment with the vet as soon as possible.

And how is your cat doing?

    Hi there.

That’s exactly right. Get in touch with your vet and see what they say. My cat’s abscess cleared up after a few weeks of treatment.

    Hi everyone

My cat has had this for a few days now (well, since I first noticed it anyway)

Could you let me know if this looks like anything your cats have had before?

I'm worried it might be something more serious

    Hi,

My cat has come down with the same thing.

After a check-up at the local vet practice, it turns out to be an allergy to flea saliva.

For treatment, he had an anti-allergy jab, followed by a monthly flea treatment and some anti-allergy medication (twice a day for 10 days).

I’m heading back to the vet in 10 days for a follow-up.

I’m glad I’ve finally got an answer because, judging by the previous posts, it didn’t look like it was going to be easy. As for the vets you’ve seen who couldn’t help, you should tell them to go back to school or find a new career! ;)

Hi, I’m not sure if you’ll be able to reply, but my cat has exactly the same problem and I don’t know what it is...
