Stitches on my cat after spaying

Hi everyone,

My cat was spayed on Tuesday, 21st March. So, she has stitches on her belly. She's currently wearing a cone and it's healing well. I went back to the vet on Friday and I was in for a shock — she was extremely aggressive, attacking, scratching, etc. The vet still managed to check the stitches and everything's fine. The appointment to have her stitches removed is on 3rd April.

However, I had to go back on Tuesday evening because she had a sort of lump under her wound. It turned out to be nothing, but it was the same story again — they had to use a net to catch her... more attacking, etc. Because of that, the vet told us to just let her take her own stitches out by Friday evening...

I've looked everywhere and I haven't seen anyone talk about a cat removing their own stitches on the vet's advice!

Should I be worried? Have any of you ever had a cat that took out their own stitches?

Thanks in advance...

I have to admit, I find it quite worrying (maybe I'm overreacting) to let a cat pull out her own stitches in case she ends up hurting herself :/

    Erm...

If they’re dissolvable stitches, there’s no problem, but for non-dissolvable ones, I’m not so sure...

Mind you, if she’s already healed up, it might not be an issue if she takes them out herself. Personally, I wouldn't let her do it though, as she might end up making a right mess of it...

    Thanks for your reply!

No, I don't think so, as they weren't due to be taken out until next Monday. I called another vet and they said it wasn't a problem that she’d pulled her stitches out herself, but I’m now wondering if they might have assumed they were dissolvable... (I didn’t specify). Anyway, I hope she’ll be alright.

    Thanks again!

    Aren't they dissolvable stitches?

I've honestly never heard of that, and I get a female cat spayed about every three months or so (but they’re always dissolvable stitches, so obviously that's why)...

As for the lump, it's probably nothing, but definitely give another vet a ring to get a second opinion!
