Hi everyone,

I’m home alone, I took my dog out to do her business and I’ve just come face to face with a dead cat... I’d taken my other dog out an hour before and it wasn't there then! There are flies buzzing all around it, it's absolutely awful. I don’t understand how it got there; my gate is open so either it crawled in here to die, or someone’s dumped it...? We’re near a main road, so perhaps it was someone who didn’t know what to do with the body?

I’m waiting for my parents to get back, I feel so helpless and I have absolutely no idea what to do!

We've found the owners, who live in our neighbourhood, and the cat has been returned to them... The lady was in tears :( Such a sad story...

Hi, If he's been hit by a car, it's possible the adrenaline helped him get as far as your place before he collapsed. It could also be poisoning. You should take the cat to the vet to see if he’s microchipped and fill out a form to say you found a deceased animal on the public highway (don’t say he was in your garden, say he was on the road or just outside your house). You can ask the vet if they can tell the cause of death; it’s worth knowing in case there’s someone poisoning pets in the neighbourhood. You can put him in a bin bag and keep him in the freezer until you can drop him off. It’s not exactly pleasant, but it’s better than letting him decompose at room temperature.
