Something stuck in her throat?

Hi everyone!

I’m posting here because my cat has been acting strangely tonight, and I’m getting a bit worried...

The kitten is about 5 months old; I rescued her, along with her two siblings and her mum, 3 months ago.

Earlier this evening, she was trying to swallow something (which I tried to get off her, but failed) that ended up making a "crunching" sound. I immediately thought it was a milk tooth, and knowing that's quite common, I didn't worry at first.

Shortly after, she started swallowing constantly and flicking her tongue out frantically as if she was licking her chops. I gave her some cat grass, and while she was nibbling it, she started pawing at her mouth violently with her front paws (the tips of which ended up pinkish, as if she’d been bleeding).

She’s also letting the tip of her tongue poke out of her mouth, which she never used to do, and she started kneading three times in a row, all by herself in a corner.

She is eating, and she hasn't been to her litter tray yet.

Could it just be a hairball? What can I do to help her?

If any of you have any thoughts, advice, or suggestions, I’d be more than grateful! Thanks in advance.

Hi there, I’ve got a bit of a problem. I’ve got a sore throat, I’m shaking, having trouble sleeping and I’m struggling to breathe. I’ve also lost my appetite and weight, and I’m finding it hard to swallow.

And this has been going on for several days now. Clogging up the front page with old posts seems to be Provétojunior's new mission...

    Hi there,

It is indeed possible that the object she swallowed is causing the discomfort behind this strange behaviour. If your cat has something stuck in her throat, it could be bothering her when she eats (have you noticed anything unusual during mealtimes?) or affecting her breathing. In that case, it’s important to see a vet.

It would be helpful to know what she might have swallowed to help determine what’s causing the irritation. If it’s a sharp object or an insect that might have stung her, it’s obviously much more urgent to get her to a vet.

You should keep a close eye on her and consult a professional if she starts making gagging noises, seems to have trouble breathing or eating, or if you notice any swelling, a painful area, or if she generally seems a bit off.

    All the best,

    Manon

Hi everyone, I’m reopening this thread because my cat is having the same problem. After eating, she tries to get something out of her mouth with her left paw and it clearly hurts because she cries out. I’ve had everything done—X-rays, kidney and liver blood tests... it clears up with antibiotics but then comes back, and the vet can’t find the cause. I’m at my wits' end. Hi, I see the last post was two months ago. Did you find a solution? My cat is doing exactly the same thing. Does yours have a pinkish spot on their lip? Or the gums?

Hi everyone, I need some help. Since this evening my cat has been breathing heavily as if she has a sore throat and she’s refusing to eat her treats or dry food. Every time she opens her mouth she coughs like she's trying to bring something up that's stuck; she's coughing a lot. I've looked at her tongue and it's not pink anymore, what should I do???? It could be anything, ranging from something minor to a life-threatening emergency. Basically, don't wait—when it’s a matter of vital signs like breathing, get her to a vet immediately.

See a vet for a diagnosis of possible calicivirus and a course of antibiotics to get this flare-up under control. Keep us posted.
