One pupil more dilated than the other

Hi everyone,

My Charlie's right pupil is more dilated than her left. I went to see the vet about it on 16th December and she told me it was due to inflammation, which is linked to her FeLV (Feline Leukaemia Virus).

She gave her an injection of Convenia and some steroids, a treatment Charlie has been on for several months now to help with her mouth inflammation.

She told me the treatment would be effective for up to 3 weeks and that if I noticed any change in her behaviour and/or any cloudiness in the eye, I had to contact them immediately.

Charlie is doing well today, but she still has this asymmetry (see photos) and I’m wondering if I should call the vet back or if it’s just "normal" (at least, nothing worrying that needs medical attention).

One pupil more dilated than the other

As a reminder, she has FeLV, so she’s quite vulnerable; I might be worrying for nothing, but I don’t want to risk letting a serious illness take hold.

Thanks in advance.

Hi @Trifouillette and @Provéto, thanks for your replies.

To answer @Trifouillette, no, she didn’t have this asymmetry before the end of November. But it’s reassuring to hear that your cat is doing well despite it. She’s absolutely lovely, by the way!

To answer @Provéto, thanks for the explanation. She seems a bit more sluggish lately, but it’s probably just down to everyone being back at work and us not being home as much during the day. Regardless, she’s still eating as much as ever and is as cuddly as ever.

Thanks again for your replies! :)

Hi there, This issue with the dilated pupil isn't an emergency in itself, and it doesn't interfere with your cat's vital functions. You can definitely wait until your vet is back to give them a ring. However, do keep a very close eye on your cat’s behaviour and general condition to spot any potential deterioration related to their illness. Monitor their appetite and energy levels, and watch out for any lethargy or mood changes, as these could be signs of a more serious problem. Hope this helps, Have a good day, Mathilde

    Hello and Happy New Year.

Was her pupil already dilated like that?

If you’re worried, give your vet a call. I have a little cat with a dilated pupil myself, and she leads a perfectly normal life.

Happy New Year to you too! :) And thanks for your reply, it’s put my mind at ease a bit as this is my first cat, and even more so because she’s poorly... So sometimes even the slightest little thing scares me; I really wouldn't want her to be in any pain. I’m going to call another vet tomorrow to find out a bit more, that makes a lot of sense as you explained. Thanks again and have a lovely evening!

Good evening, First off: HAPPY NEW YEAR! 🍾 Secondly, I think you should trust your vet's advice. They’ve told you that it's a symptom linked to feline leukaemia, but also to stay in touch with them if it persists. You could always get a second opinion from another vet, though, either to put your mind at ease or to find out if a mistake has been made. In any case, I reckon it can only be a good thing to get two professional opinions.

Good evening, unfortunately the vet who saw Charlie is away on holiday and isn’t back until 10/01. That’s why I’m reaching out to the community to see if anyone has dealt with something similar or might have some advice for me! But if you think it’s best to call someone straight away, I can try contacting another practice instead.

Hi, maybe you could just give the vet a ring to get their advice.
