Need help: taking my cat's dead kitten away

Hello, Maya had four kittens a week ago; three were stillborn, and the fourth survived until last night but has now passed away. The problem is that she keeps carrying it to me wherever I go, then she lies down next to it and licks it while crying. I know I'm going to have to take it away from her, but how? She's crying so much and won't stop licking it; she's just put it back in her basket next to me now. I feel so sorry for her, and what about her milk? What's going to happen with that? I don't know what to do, if anyone can help... it's absolutely heartbreaking!

Thanks in advance

Yes, you should get her spayed as soon as possible ;)

The poor little girl must be so heartbroken about her kittens, so do give her plenty of love and affection. You'll need to help her milk dry up, otherwise she'll get poorly and be in a lot of pain. And make sure to get her spayed—she’ll be much happier for it in the long run.

Oh, that's awful! But as Euqinorev says, it's just their instinct... =(

Yes, it’s absolutely awful for us that she ate her kitten, but it’s just instinct. In the wild, cats do this to protect the rest of the litter. In this case, there weren't any others, sadly, but instinct is instinct... Don't hold it against her; she was only doing what she felt she had to do. Now, you definitely need to get her to the vet regarding her milk and to get her spayed. Hang in there.

Actually, they belong to owners who are abandoning their cats, so since they're technically theirs, I don't think I'm allowed to neuter cats that don't belong to me.

Oh yes, it’s awful. Make sure you see a vet to help dry up her milk and then have her spayed

so that it doesn't happen again.

Oh god, it’s honestly awful! As for the little one, I popped out for 15 minutes to get some bread and in that time Maya ate her baby. It’s horrific, I’m still struggling to take it all in!

    Oh... that’s so sad :'(

Get some advice from a vet...

I was at a friend's house once and there were these owners who'd abandoned their cat, and you could see she had really swollen teats.

We asked the owners what had happened and they said she'd had 4 kittens but they were all stillborn. She didn't have the chance to nurse them, so she was still producing milk... here's a photo, it looks a bit grim but anyway.
