Need help: taking my cat's dead kitten away

Hello, Maya had four kittens a week ago; three were stillborn, and the fourth survived until last night but has now passed away. The problem is that she keeps carrying it to me wherever I go, then she lies down next to it and licks it while crying. I know I'm going to have to take it away from her, but how? She's crying so much and won't stop licking it; she's just put it back in her basket next to me now. I feel so sorry for her, and what about her milk? What's going to happen with that? I don't know what to do, if anyone can help... it's absolutely heartbreaking!

Thanks in advance

I'm so sorry to hear that. My heart really goes out to you and your cat... Give the vet a ring just to be sure about how to handle things with her after this; she's going to need plenty of support. Best of luck and I'm truly sorry for everything.

Are you sure there isn't a vet who can fit you in tomorrow?

I've never heard of the cork trick.

    This is just awful.

It doesn't look good at all in the photo; you need to get her to a vet straight away.

One of my cats had stillborn kittens; I took them away from her immediately and she spent days crying and looking for them.

I had to give her so much extra care and attention.

Best of luck with this little puss.

Evening everyone, my vet is away on holiday so I’ve had to find another one, but they can’t fit me in until next week. In the meantime, a friend told me to put a collar made of corks on her to stop her milk from coming in; her mum used to do it with every litter (which she used to kill, back in those days, well...), have any of you ever heard of that? I’ve gone ahead and done it anyway while I wait for the appointment. Love to everyone and thanks again for all your support.

It’s only natural for Maya to be so heartbroken. You should take the kitten away and bury it somewhere well away from her. It’ll probably take about 4 or 5 days for her to move on; if you thoroughly wash and disinfect the areas the kitten touched—even after it passed away—it will help remove the scent. Best of luck to you.

    Good evening Virginie,

So sorry to hear about this awful and sad situation... Poor Maya, my heart breaks for her... Yes, give her as much affection as you possibly can, the poor thing, it must be so hard for her.

I don’t want to tell you what to do, but if I were in your shoes, I’d get her to the vet straight away, if only to check her milk and make sure everything is okay health-wise after giving birth...

Yes, it’s definitely best to have her spayed; it will prevent this kind of heartbreaking thing from happening again...

    Hang in there, Virginie...

I think so too lylerose, as she won’t leave my side. I’m trying my best with all my lot at the moment, but I’m really focusing on Maya right now because she truly needs it. She’s never been this clingy before, so it just goes to show she really needs me. Have a lovely evening.

Poor kittens and poor mum as well :( it’s absolutely heartbreaking. I think she’s staying close to you for some comfort and reassurance after losing her little ones.

Thanks so much, yes, I am indeed going to get her spayed. And no @jocya, I don’t blame Maya at all for what she did, but it’s quite upsetting to see. Now she’s constantly glued to me and won’t leave my side, so I’m trying to reassure her and giving her loads of cuddles – I just feel so sorry for her. Thanks for your support and have a lovely evening.
