My neighbour's cat won't leave my house

Hi everyone,

So, for a few months now, on my way home from classes, I've been playing with my neighbour's cat in the street for a few minutes. Except for the last four weeks, her ladyship has well and truly moved herself in... And she really refuses to leave; I've already put her out "by force" four or five times, but she always finds a way to get back in. I'm very fond of her, but I'm starting to have some serious trouble with the neighbour, who is threatening to call the police... I'm honestly at my wits' end with her ringing my doorbell at all hours of the day and night to accuse me of stealing her cat and calling me every name under the sun... I've already asked around, but nobody knows how to make her leave, so I'm turning to you. If you have any advice, I'd love to hear it :)

Yeah, but then again, it’s not like I should’ve been hanging around her cat... I tried telling her that if she looked after him better, he might actually stay at her place, but she won’t hear a word of it. Thanks for the advice! :)

You haven't stolen her cat. The cat was just roaming around, so she’s the one in the wrong. If she doesn’t want her cat going into the neighbours’ gardens, she shouldn’t be letting it out.

I didn’t realise I could do that... I thought I was the only one to blame ^^

I do feel awful for effectively nicking her cat, so I’m going to wait a bit before making a police report... But honestly, it’s becoming unbearable now, so if she doesn’t stop I’ll do it next week, even if my conscience takes a bit of a hit :)

You could try contacting the RSPCA or a local animal rescue, as if the cat is making itself at home at your place, it might be because he’s not happy where he lives. They’ll be able to give you some advice.

Besides, you’re actually the one who should be complaining if her cat is coming into your house—she’s responsible for him!

Logging it for the record is a very good idea. It doesn’t trigger an investigation or anything like that.

It makes the facts official and will protect you.

She’s got a lot of nerve considering her cat is roaming around; you could actually file a formal complaint.

Just log a report, it’ll only take you fifteen minutes, it acts as a deterrent, and it covers you against any potential legal action.

You need to explain to your neighbour that a cat that goes outdoors will roam wherever it pleases. If she wants to keep her at home, she either needs to stop letting her out or build a secure catio. I’d also suggest getting ahead of the situation and logging a report for harassment against your neighbour. That way, the police will already be aware of the facts—specifically that the cat is coming to your house of its own accord. Otherwise, if the police are a bit daft and she calls them while the cat is at your place, they might actually treat it as theft.
