My neighbour's cat won't leave my house

Hi everyone,

So, for a few months now, on my way home from classes, I've been playing with my neighbour's cat in the street for a few minutes. Except for the last four weeks, her ladyship has well and truly moved herself in... And she really refuses to leave; I've already put her out "by force" four or five times, but she always finds a way to get back in. I'm very fond of her, but I'm starting to have some serious trouble with the neighbour, who is threatening to call the police... I'm honestly at my wits' end with her ringing my doorbell at all hours of the day and night to accuse me of stealing her cat and calling me every name under the sun... I've already asked around, but nobody knows how to make her leave, so I'm turning to you. If you have any advice, I'd love to hear it :)

I’ve taken the cat in since she’s bought another one and doesn't want him anymore... She actually told me herself that she didn't want to, and I quote, "keep this thing that has no respect for its owner" and that she didn't want to see him in her house anymore, otherwise "God knows what she’ll do to him". Seriously? I’m not sure what’s more shocking—the fact she just handed the cat over to you like that, or the fact she’s gone and bought another one... My God. There's one thing I'll never understand, and that's people like this who are desperate to have a pet but won't take any responsibility for them. And the worst part is she's getting another one... I really hope for your sake that history doesn't repeat itself with this new cat. You could always be proactive and go back to the police station where you filed the report, just to let them know that the woman in question is planning on getting another cat. Anyway, people like that just make me so sad...

Well, for now it’s all a bit of a nightmare. Basically, when he wasn’t "really" staying all the time, things were fine with Kitty, but now it’s turned into a total war zone... I don’t really understand the hows and whys of it, seeing as they used to get on so well :3 Quite frankly, I couldn’t care less if she comes to pester me or not; she told me herself she didn't want to, and I quote, "look after this thing that has no respect for its owner anymore, and she didn't want to see him at her place again, otherwise God knows what she'll do to him." I just hope her other cat doesn't get the bright idea to come and move into my place x)

Um, just a bit of advice though—make sure you get a transfer of ownership document and register the microchip in your name. Otherwise, she could really give you some grief...

Well, it’s crazy how fast she’s gone and got another cat. To be honest, I reckon she just wanted to make your life a misery or slap a lawsuit on you to squeeze some money out of you. It’s blindingly obvious she doesn’t really care about her cat, but I’m just glad you’re finally being left in peace. The cat is definitely better off with you anyway.

I live in a house :) We filed a police report and she stopped harassing me straight away. Mind you, I’ve taken the cat back now because she’s bought another one and doesn't want him anymore...

You could try luring them from your place to your neighbour's, but if the distance is too far I'm not sure how else I can help (unless I come up with another idea).

First of all, do you live in a flat or a house?

I’m not sure how to help you keep your neighbour’s cat out of your place, but as for the harassment, you could leave a note on your door at night. You should point out that it’s her who’s in the wrong, not you—you aren't keeping her cat captive, it's breaking into your house! Also, mention that she shouldn't be coming round and harassing you in the middle of the night when you've no doubt got things to do during the day and need a decent night’s sleep. I completely agree that you shouldn’t have to block off your cat flap. Why should your cat be punished because of your neighbour’s? It’s up to her to lock her own cat flap, but she really needs to understand that!

So, what’s the latest with that neighbour then?

Yeah, fair enough, but just because she’s a pain doesn’t mean she’s mistreating her cat. I’m not saying the neighbour is in the right (definitely not 👎), but we shouldn’t get the two things mixed up. Anyway, looking at the photos, he doesn’t look like he’s being mistreated.
