My kitten never sleeps – what should I do?

Hi everyone,

I adopted a kitten about two and a half months ago, and she’s now almost six months old.

My problem is that she never seems to sleep during the day.

When she first arrived, I kept her in a separate room because I have another cat and wanted to do the introductions properly. At the start, I’d let her out every now and then to get my other cat used to her. Nowadays, she’s out in the house all day, but I still put her back in her own room for the night (at least for the time being).

The issue is that she never sleeps! She spends the whole day playing, tearing around the house and eating. She never settles down anywhere to rest. The only rare occasions where she does rest are when I’m resting too (on the sofa or in bed). This means she’s only really sleeping at night in her room. If I want her to nap during the day, I have to put her in her room; she’ll meow for a bit and then eventually drop off.

I’m worried because cats (especially young ones) need a lot of sleep, and that doesn't seem to be happening here.

Does anyone have any advice or suggestions?

PS: She’s just been spayed and won’t be going outside until the spring.

Good evening, Some cats are naturally more active than others—it’s just down to their personality—and the fact that he’s a kitten (who tend to be more playful and easily stimulated) can definitely make this more noticeable. It’s perfectly normal for deep sleep to seem ‘rare’; light sleep actually accounts for at least 75% of their total daily sleep time. As long as you haven’t noticed any decline in his general health, and he’s still eating and drinking properly and staying active, you shouldn’t have anything to worry about. I hope this helps! Yeah, you're right, she isn't being bothered by anyone or anything. But when I'm at home and I'm doing bits and pieces (cleaning, cooking, etc.), she's always wide awake and just won't settle down then. She'll only rest if I'm sitting still. I'm just a bit worried because she doesn't get many hours of sleep (about 10–13 hours a day), especially since she’s still a kitten. Even when she is resting, she’s always alert and on the lookout. As soon as there's a noise, she wakes up. She's very rarely in a deep sleep (except at night in her room, obviously).

    Hi there,

Your cat will sleep whenever she feels like sleeping, and it just so happens that she's chosen the night. There would only be a problem if she was being prevented from resting when she needed to—for instance, if she was being bothered by another cat or a child, or there was noise from building work, etc. As long as you leave her in peace when she settles down, there’s no issue at all.

I’ve seen plenty of things when it comes to cats, but I’ve never known one to die of insomnia!

    Thanks for your reply.

I do think she sleeps through the night as I’ve never heard her.

In the evening, after a day of not sleeping, she’s exhausted. And that’s the problem—she’s tired but she won’t settle down on her own; you have to put her in her room.

If she sleeps all night, you’ve got yourself a diurnal cat! That’s a first for me! Lucky you... but if she isn’t sleeping through the night, it’s probably a health issue. On a more serious note, if I were you, I’d take her straight to the vet regardless, or at the very least, give the vet a ring to ask if it’s normal. I don’t know loads about cats even though we have two at home; I specialise more in rabbits. I hope you get the answer you’re looking for.
