My cat won't stop licking my other cat

Hi everyone,

I'm writing because I'd like to understand why my cat is doing this. Let me explain:

I've got two cats, a male and a female, who've grown up together since they were three months old (they're one now). Everything is usually fine—they play together, sleep together, and so on...

But for quite a while now, the female has been spending ages grooming the male and nibbling him. At first, he doesn't mind, but when it starts going on for too long, he gets fed up and lets her know by biting her. He won't let go though, and I have to step in and separate them, otherwise he just keeps his teeth clamped onto her. Then, she just starts grooming him all over again until he's had enough once more.

Even when he's just off in his own little world playing or whatever, she'll come over, give him a few licks, and then head off again.

On the other hand, whenever he tries to groom her, 'her ladyship' isn't having any of it and attacks him.

Is this normal cat behaviour?

If anyone knows why she might be doing this, I'd love to hear your thoughts! 😁

In this case, it’s possible the female is licking the male to leave her own scent on him to make herself feel more secure. The fact she won't let him return the favour suggests as much. She's probably still a bit wary of him, even though she's accepting him.

    Thanks for your reply.

Actually, I forgot to mention, yes, they’ve both been neutered.

Hi there, If your two cats haven't been neutered yet, it's possible this behaviour is because they are looking for a mate, and you should probably think about getting them done—or at least one of them. That said, cats can be affectionate with one another without it being about breeding! Even though cats are often described as solitary animals, some experts consider them a social species... a contradiction that probably just shows how much it varies from one cat to the next. Grooming is part of what's known as 'affiliative behaviour' (along with rubbing against each other), which is all about maintaining a good bond. So, generally speaking... there’s nothing to worry about! However, if you are using a spot-on treatment for fleas or parasites, try to make sure they can't lick each other so that the female doesn't end up ingesting the chemicals from the male. Have a lovely evening, Victoire

    Hi there,

First obvious question: have your cats been neutered?
