My cat won't lie down or go to the toilet after being spayed

Hi everyone,

My cat has just been spayed this morning and I picked her up late this afternoon. She's quite calm, but her recovery suit seems to be making her move a bit stiffly. Is it normal that she'll only stay in a sitting position? I also haven't seen her use the litter tray since 7 pm.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

The surgery was only very recently, so she’ll still be feeling groggy from the anaesthetic as well as the pain; the scar will be making it uncomfortable for her to jump or walk at the moment.

Don’t worry, she’ll be back to her usual self in a day or two. And a recovery suit is a must for this kind of op—it keeps the dressing well protected and stops her from fussing at it.

As for her toilet habits, that’ll settle down... during an anaesthetic, all a cat’s bodily functions slow right down (just like with us), so it takes a bit of time for everything to get moving again. Keep an eye on her, she should go at some point today.

Hi there, Regarding her moving about, I think it’s completely normal for her to feel a bit awkward with the bandage she’s wearing. Cats generally aren't fans of them and she might even try to pull it off. As for her doing her business, just keep an eye out tomorrow to make sure she’s urinating at the very least; my girls have gone a full day without having a poo before. If anything seems a bit unusual, just give your vet a quick ring tomorrow.

I forgot to mention, she’s stopped jumping onto the bed or any small furniture, so I’m having to lift her whenever she wants to get up... is all this because of the recovery suit? 😞
