My cat swallowed some polystyrene, help!

Hi everyone.

So here's what's happened: when I got home from work today, my mum, my brother and I found the bin completely ripped apart with a polystyrene tray that had been "chewed up". There's a very good chance it was my cat, Mystic, who ate it! I only found this out a few hours ago and I haven't got any liquid paraffin! I've no idea how much she might have swallowed. What should I do? Should I take her to the vet tomorrow, bearing in mind that I'm a bit short on cash? (I'm only doing temp work over the holidays to pay for my driving licence). Or should I wait for "symptoms" to appear? (At the moment Mystic is sleeping peacefully on the bed). I'm really scared of losing her because I know it's toxic and could be fatal! Thanks a lot for any advice.

If you call your vet, you’ll get a voicemail giving you the number for the out-of-hours vet.

If you find some polystyrene in the litter tray, it’s a good sign, but you should still take them to the vet just in case.

Thanks for your messages, but I’m still not sure if it’s okay. A friend’s cat was sick and had runny poo after swallowing some polystyrene and she died a few days later anyway... Ange, what should I keep an eye on just in case? How do I get hold of an out-of-hours vet? Thanks everyone for your help.

Polystyrene isn't a hard material; it softens and doesn't absorb water, so she'll either vomit it up or you'll just need to keep an eye on the litter tray.

When Peluche was little, he used to chew his foam balls, and the result was little colourful poos in the litter tray.

You can always call an out-of-hours vet just to be sure, though.

If it’s been thrown up, I actually think that’s a good sign. Mind you, I don’t know for sure and unfortunately I’m not a vet.

Alright Loang, I get it, no need to take the piss. It’s not like I’m not already feeling rubbish enough as it is, cheers for the support -_-. I know my question was a bit daft, but I was in a total panic when I wrote it, I’m freaking out about my girl here... but I don’t deserve to be humiliated like that on top of everything else.

If I take even one milligram of penicillin, I’ll still have an allergic reaction.

Even if it's only a little bit? Alright, I'll call the vet tomorrow then, thanks so much :(

First and foremost, give a vet a call and ask for advice over the phone, then do whatever is necessary depending on what they tell you.

"Is my cat really at risk of dying after this or not?"

    Absolutely.
