My cat keeps peeing in the same spot (outside her litter tray)

Right, I'm posting here because I'm at my wits' end!

My girlfriend and I have had our cat, Frimousse, for just over a year now. She's very playful and cuddly, and she’s always been house-trained... at least until recently. Basically, since we got back from our holidays and term started again (at the beginning of September), she’s been peeing in the exact same spot every time (her litter tray is in the loo, and she wees in a corner of the room), almost every day. We've tried everything; the vet said she isn't ill, so it might be down to stress... We’ve put newspaper down to avoid having to scrub the floor every day, and she still goes on the paper, even with white vinegar on it! So we change the paper every time she pees on it, and her litter tray is cleaned out regularly. I should mention she does still use her tray as well. We’ve really tried everything and she’s still doing it. I honestly don't get it and it’s starting to really get on my nerves because the bathroom is starting to smell really bad!

I should also add that when we go back to our parents’ for the weekend, she only uses her tray and never goes outside it. She only does this in the flat, which never used to happen before.

Anyway, thanks in advance for your help!

Evening, I’m in the same boat with my cat, except for us it happens on the bed (which isn't great!). After trying everything, just like you, our vet confirmed it was down to stress. Every time we change her food, change the type of litter, or even just move her tray, it starts all over again... same thing if we’re away for a weekend or move any furniture. A calming supplement called Nervosyl worked really well for us! We also try to avoid moving anything that might stress her out even more, which has been the most effective thing. We’ve also put out a second litter tray, and the accidents have really decreased since then. Best of luck!

    😋 🤷

    Blimey, tell me about it...

I’ve had this same problem and it’s a real nightmare. It’s still not quite sorted yet.

I went to see a vet behaviourist. They prescribed "Nervosyl", which is a natural herbal remedy. It costs about £11 a bottle, and you give about ten drops a day. It’s been really effective, even if it hasn’t completely solved the issue.

I’d tried Feliway before, but it was a total waste of time in my case!

Just in case, try putting out a second litter tray a good distance away from the first one. Some cats can't stand weeing and pooing in the same spot (and just to be clear, it’s not because of the smell).

    Best regards

Hi everyone, First of all, thanks for your replies! To answer your questions, our girl was spayed when she was 6 months old, so quite a while ago now (given she’s 1 year and 3 months old). We haven't changed her litter, and we did try moving the tray to a different spot, but she just keeps going in another corner of the room. She has a hooded litter tray, but we’ve also tried taking the lid off just in case, and it hasn't changed anything... Last time she peed just 10 minutes after I'd finished cleaning her tray out... I'll give catnip a go, I hadn't thought of that! Thanks a lot!

    Evening,

Getting her spayed could definitely be a solution if she’s marking. However, the issue might be down to something else. Have you changed her litter recently, or moved the tray? Is it an open tray or a hooded one? Do you make sure to clean it out every day? You could try moving the tray to a different spot if possible, just to see if that makes a difference. You could also try putting some catnip in the litter; cats find the smell really enticing and it might encourage her to use it.

    Hi there,

You should get her spayed if it hasn’t been done yet; females are just as prone to marking as males.

What kind of litter tray do you have? And what’s your cleaning routine like?
