My cat keeps moving her kittens – why?

Evening everyone,

Since this evening, my cat Cachou has been picking up her kittens in her mouth and moving them around as if she’s looking for a new spot. However, she always ends up bringing them back to the cosy cardboard box I made up for her. Is this normal? Should I be worried?

Is it my fault because I’ve sometimes moved the box into my bedroom with her? I did it because I had the impression that was what she wanted after she spent ages meowing at me. I’m really not sure what to think, so any advice would be great.

Hope to hear from you soon.

No, it’s not a myth, but there’s a surefire way to avoid this problem: get him neutered at around 5 or 6 months old.

Mind you, even an unspayed female can mark her territory by peeing everywhere when she’s in season (which can happen quite often), just like a male, so she really needs to be spayed too.

So, is it just a myth that males wee all over the place?

Ooh, that’s a really tough one to give advice on.

You’ll only really see their personalities develop as they grow up.

Now, of course there are always exceptions, but in my own experience—whether with moggies or pedigrees (and across various breeds)—one thing usually holds true: the males are more affectionate.

To sum it up: the females are often cheekier and smarter, while the males are cuddlier and more laid-back.

Tell me, what would you recommend? We want to keep one of the babies but the choice is so tough!! Is there really much of a difference in temperament between a male and a female?

That's right Dellys, she's my girl. Actually, apart from the little tabby, the other three are just like Cachou!

So that means at least one of the parents must have some white on them then.

Yeah, I'll give it a go in a while once the kitty is completely chilled out. They've almost all got a white patch on their bellies, and one definitely has white tips on her back paws.

Could you take some photos of them individually? I’d like to see one of their back, one of their tummy, and also one showing the white on the back legs, as I can’t see any. It’s a bit odd – I can see three black ones but you’re mentioning patches on the tummy. Having longer fur doesn't necessarily mean anything. Usually, when you have both short-haired and long-haired kittens in the same litter, you can tell the difference. Short-haired kittens tend to look a bit chunkier with their fur standing up, almost like a pom-pom, and it looks quite matt, whereas long-haired kittens have fur that lies flatter and looks shinier.

Thanks Dellys! Oh, what a shame about their little stripes, they were so cute; as for their coats, they’ve got longer white hairs scattered through (just like their mum) and patches on their tummies, one has just got white toes on her back paws – so adorable.

Sevv, yeah, I’m with you on the pedigree stuff... I just enjoyed looking at the similarities. When we saw the photos of the Yorkie, it was like looking at our girl. Obviously, ours isn't a specific breed, or at least not a purebred. Anyway, regardless of her breed or her coat, we absolutely adore her!
