My cat keeps moving her kittens – why?

Evening everyone,

Since this evening, my cat Cachou has been picking up her kittens in her mouth and moving them around as if she’s looking for a new spot. However, she always ends up bringing them back to the cosy cardboard box I made up for her. Is this normal? Should I be worried?

Is it my fault because I’ve sometimes moved the box into my bedroom with her? I did it because I had the impression that was what she wanted after she spent ages meowing at me. I’m really not sure what to think, so any advice would be great.

Hope to hear from you soon.

You really should have her spayed before you go away on holiday.

How old will the kittens be when you're on holiday?

Well, you’re going to have to figure something out because if you let her out, she might not find her way back (after all, she’ll be on unfamiliar ground).

How many days old are they exactly?

They start wanting to explore "the world" at around 3 weeks old.

It all happens so quickly, doesn't it!

Oh, goodness, it’s a holiday home; in the height of summer we have to leave everything open or we’d absolutely melt!

Besides, a cat always finds its way back, doesn't it?

Right, their eyes are finally open! They aren’t blue yet, more of a black colour at the moment. When do they start coming out to explore their surroundings and clamber about everywhere?

A 30-minute journey is nothing at all.

So, there's no need to worry.

If I were you, I wouldn’t let her out; for one, she might not be spayed yet, but it’s also a relatively short stay, so she can just stay indoors.

And don’t be fooled, her little one will already be "grown up" (in her eyes, if not yours) and if she wants to go out, she won’t be looking after him at all.

Give them a bit of time to grow and I’m sure your choice will become clearer as time goes on :)

And you’ll see, once their eyes are fully open, it’s absolutely magical.

Fair enough, the journey isn't long at all anyway (only 30 mins). But with the move and the change of scenery, is there a risk she might get lost if she goes out? At the moment, she wanders around a bit during the day but she always comes back home. I’m thinking that since she’ll still have her kitten with her, she’ll probably stick close by.

If he was the only one I’d fallen for, it would be an impossible choice, yes!!!! ;-(

The tabby is so pretty, I love her little face; Socks is just so sweet with those two little white paws, and Liquorice is good enough to eat! Grr
