My cat keeps moving her kittens – why?

Evening everyone,

Since this evening, my cat Cachou has been picking up her kittens in her mouth and moving them around as if she’s looking for a new spot. However, she always ends up bringing them back to the cosy cardboard box I made up for her. Is this normal? Should I be worried?

Is it my fault because I’ve sometimes moved the box into my bedroom with her? I did it because I had the impression that was what she wanted after she spent ages meowing at me. I’m really not sure what to think, so any advice would be great.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Evening everyone, First of all, thanks so much to everyone for getting back to me so quickly :-)! Well, after a very hectic evening and start to the night, Cachou stayed in her box for the rest of the night. I thought everything was back to normal until I felt something under the duvet early this morning!! Haha!! So, the morning started with all seven of us in bed! That didn't last long, though, because a bit later she ended up hiding them in our wardrobe, on the top shelf. This is worrying me as I'm scared the kittens might fall, even though they're only 16 days old at the moment. Should I just keep letting her get on with it? I must admit, I'm a complete novice and I'm feeling a bit lost... Thanks in advance for your advice :-)

    I also think it’s just a female cat’s instinct!

    That’s perfectly normal.

However, try to make sure the box is in the room where you spend most of your time, as she’ll probably want to be near you.

It is VITAL that she keeps her kittens in the same place, so it’s up to you to make sure she doesn’t move them.

The risk is that she might only move some of the kittens and leave the others behind—if that happens, they wouldn't survive.

Make sure you plan to have the mum neutered in about 6 weeks' time :)
