My cat keeps going to the litter tray for no reason!

Hi everyone, my cat is constantly going to his litter tray and about three-quarters of the time he’s just going in there to 'scratch around' (if you can even call it that). It’s so annoying because he gets litter everywhere, all the time! We can hear him all night long and we have to keep getting up to move him out of there, otherwise we just can't get any sleep! Is there any way to get him to only use the litter tray when he actually needs to do his business? – any advice would be great!

Cheers!

But that's actually what I've got (I know you weren't to know), a hooded litter tray. We're trying out a few different types of litter at the moment until we find the right one!

My cat used to do the same thing and it turned out she had kidney problems and was struggling to pee. After the vet treated her, we had to put her on special urinary dry food, and she stopped scratching around in the litter tray without doing anything. It’s true that cats don't really like messing about in their litter; they’re naturally quite clean animals and usually only go to their toilet area to do their business. There’s almost certainly an issue there; with kidneys, there aren't always warning signs. I remember the vet just felt her kidneys and could tell straight away they were enlarged—the diagnosis was very quick.

Try a tray with higher sides, then he won't make such a mess.

Normally, a cat only goes in their tray to do their business. Is it being cleaned out often enough?

What kind of litter are you using?

He doesn't have any health issues (thankfully). We went to the vet not long ago; he did a check-up and said everything was fine (but unfortunately I forgot to ask him if this litter tray issue was normal).

Yes, it’s quite a large litter tray! He’s got all the room he needs and even a bit extra.

If he’s doing that, there might be a problem. Perhaps a health issue, because a cat never uses the litter tray just for fun.

Is there enough room in the litter tray for him to do his business?
