My cat is peeing on me

Hi everyone,

First thing this morning, my 5-year-old cat hopped onto the sofa, meowed twice, got into position, and peed right on me. I immediately shut him in his room as a punishment (yes, my cat has his own room). My partner let him out a bit later; he had a look at his litter tray (clean, changed yesterday, no mess in it), then climbed into a cardboard box (Christmas packaging, as we had our Christmas dinner on the 26th because we were working on the 24th and 25th) right next to my partner and peed in it.

A few months ago in our old flat, he peed on the bed, the pillows, and some clothes due to stress, but since we moved in April, his behaviour has been spotless. I really don't understand what's got into him. I’m going to take him to the vet, obviously, but we’re both working all week during their opening hours, so I won't be able to go until next week. If any of you have an idea of what might be wrong or any advice, I’d be very grateful.

Thanks to anyone who replies.

Hi. So, yesterday Calypso was on his best behaviour and didn't get up to any mischief at all. However, this morning, after we’d had our morning cuddles and I’d opened the bedroom door, he went onto the floor right next to the bed and peed on the part of the duvet that was hanging over the side. I’ve read that when a cat has a UTI, they tend to pee on soft things. I get that the sofa fits into that category, but he’s also gone on cardboard packaging and the floor, which aren’t soft at all. I’m completely baffled. I gave him some wet food last night, so I'll see how he goes. I really hope it stops, but I’m taking him to the vet on Monday regardless.

The move was back in April and Calypso has been house-trained and hasn't caused any trouble since then.

I’m going to try some wet food and see how it goes. Anyway, he didn't have any more accidents yesterday. I’ll see what the situation is when I get home.

I'm a security guard and I work from 8am to 8pm; my partner is also in the same line of work and does the same hours. We don't normally do five 12-hour shifts, but as it's November, security has been stepped up at public monuments.

    Hi there,

Two things to consider here: a house move! But he was meowing before it all started, so he was giving you a warning...

It’s likely a urinary tract infection (common in cats, especially those who eat dry food).

If that’s the case, try giving him some wet food and add a splash of water to the mix...

    Keep me posted...

Is there anything I can do to help him without making things worse while waiting for the vet appointment?

It could be a urinary tract infection, or perhaps a problem with cystitis.
