My cat is peeing in my laundry basket

Hi everyone,

I’ve had two sister cats for about a year now, and for the last few months they’ve taken to peeing in my laundry basket.

I’ve tried keeping the bathroom door shut and making sure their litter trays are kept clean, but nothing seems to work – they still always manage to end up peeing in the basket.

Does anyone have an explanation for this, or any advice?

Thanks in advance!

At least it’s not the clean washing... my late cat Bertrand, who had kidney failure, tended to do his business outside the litter tray whenever he had kidney stones...

    @Julie,

Once again, what is the point of replying to threads that are years old and clogging up the front page? It’s meant for new posts. Have you got a reply quota to hit or something?

    Hi there,

The number one cause of toileting issues in cats is the litter itself. This could be the reason why your cat is peeing on your laundry. You could try setting up another litter tray near the laundry basket (although I know there’s a risk of it smelling a bit in your bathroom). How often do you change the litter? What kind of litter are you using? You might want to try switching to a different type. It’s also worth trying different styles of trays: some cats prefer them with a hood, while others like them open. They all have their own preferences. Is the tray easy for them to get to? Have there been any big changes in your home lately? Stress can also be a reason for a cat peeing on clothes or laundry. Do you have other pets? Any changes that might have stressed them out? (Even a small change – they don't always see things the same way we do). How many trays do you have? The general rule of thumb is to have one tray per cat, plus one extra. Finally, don't hesitate to mention it to your vet, as it could be a sign of a urinary tract infection.

    Best wishes,

    Julie

If I started telling you everything Croquette "steals", you honestly wouldn't believe it...

Croquette steals chips—YES, really—but also speculoos biscuits and even gherkins... but more than anything, she’s obsessed with organic yoghurt (plain is her favourite, but she doesn't turn her nose up at other flavours either).

On the other hand, Gaminou is such a sweet, cuddly, and well-behaved cat; he gives his sister a proper telling off whenever she's being naughty, and I can tell you, it’s a full-time job for him! 😉

It’s great that your two little beans know the difference between clean and dirty 😁 And now we’ve got a new little ginger girl in the group! Please do post some photos in the album, as there are some massive fans of ginger cats on here. And what’s this charming young lady’s name? Red Bean? 🙅 No, that would have been too easy. Honestly, it makes me wonder... looking at the size of the white bean, I think it’s Mimoun (the one I lost to a stroke...) and the red bean... probably Caramel again, back when I’d just got him home after his accident. I also looked after a friend’s ginger cat for a few months (I’ve got printed photos of him, but I don’t think I have any digital ones). That cat absolutely loved soya cream and would come running as soon as he saw the pot. Mind you, none of my own cats have ever liked soya. On the other hand, some of them do like rice milk—have you ever tried that?

Maybe a lidded bin would be the answer. I have a cat who used to love jumping into our swing-top bin, and we sorted it out simply by getting a new one. Yeah, or even just by putting a board over the top. Those big cardboard wall calendars you get from the bank are well worth keeping – they come in handy for all sorts of things when you’ve got cats.

    Evening Vénus

It’s not the end of the world! She could be doing a wee on the clean washing...😁😁

Just kidding, I see Trifouillette is going to get you sorted, she's THE expert in weird feline shenanigans.😁

Two little beans in a basket.

My dirty washing is stored in a really tall basket with a lid, so there's no way for a cat to pee inside it, they just spray against the side when the mood takes them.

In the photo, that’s clean washing and they’ve taken a liking to the rug.

Try to think back to when this all started and what changed at the time. It’s not always easy, but it might really help you.
