Hello, I also have a cat who’s had thinning fur around one eye for several years, but now it’s affecting both eyes. It’s clearly very itchy for her. I’ve mentioned it to every vet I’ve seen over the years, but they never thought it was worth doing anything about. Since it’s now spread to both eyes, I’ve insisted on some action. I first tried Isathal eye gel which didn’t do anything, and then Fradexam ointment around the eyes, but nothing seems to work. Is it possible for ringworm to stay localised just to that one area? Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi everyone, first of all thanks for all your replies. As promised, I’m keeping you posted: her fur is slowly starting to grow back. I’m not sure if it’s worth mentioning that she’s pregnant; I don’t suppose it’s relevant but I thought I'd say anyway..........

Thanks again so much for your help.

    Good evening,

Fur loss in cats can be caused by many different things: parasites, inflammatory or immune conditions, behavioural issues... so it is really tricky to know exactly what is going on with your cat. The symmetrical pattern you described might suggest an inflammatory problem rather than parasites, but without seeing the cat in person, it is impossible to be sure.

In my opinion, a trip to the vet would be a good idea if your cat continues to lose fur like this. They will be able to give you a proper diagnosis and advise you on the right treatment.

    Hope this helps.

    Have a lovely evening,

    Lucie

    Hi there,

It’s not normal for a Siamese, or any other cat for that matter, to have bald patches above the eyes. If you don’t think it’s ‘an illness or something’, what else could it be? A fashion choice? LOL. I'm only joking, but a trip to the vet is a must.

Mind you, that’s an area where the fur is naturally thinner anyway. Have you made any changes to their diet recently, or used a different floor cleaner or washing powder? If they're losing fur there, they’d normally be losing it elsewhere too if it were an allergy or a parasite. I’m sure someone else will be able to give you more specific advice in the other replies. No, she hasn't lost any fur anywhere else, just above her eyes... I'll post an update soon, thanks again for your help.

If they were losing hair because of an allergy or a parasite, they’d usually be losing it in other spots as well. Mind you, if both sides of the head are affected, it could be a parasitic infection. If it hasn't cleared up or there’s no improvement in 2 to 3 days, YOU’LL NEED TO SEE A VET.

It’s possible she’s injured herself by squeezing under something and the fur has come away where the wound is. If the wound is small, it should heal up in a few days and the fur will grow back too. You can disinfect it with some Betadine. Keep an eye on it to see if it clears up on its own or not. It could also be a food allergy—from her food or treats—but since there’s an actual wound, it’s probably not that.
