Hi everyone!

My Griotte chatters whenever she sees birds. It’s adorable, but I don’t really understand what triggers these little noises.

She can carry on for a good hour without stopping.

Below is a video from this morning for those of you who aren’t sure what I mean.

Do your cats do this too?

Thanks in advance for any info!

Yes, cats chatter when they spot prey (or a really exciting toy). Or when they’re really surprised, like with the cough. It’s definitely very funny, and a bit ridiculous...

My mum's cat Loumi does that too, but only when I cough, which gives us a right laugh 🤣

My little ginger used to do that too when she saw birds. She was so funny; her teeth would chatter and she sounded just like a duck, but that was as far as it went.

Mine does the same thing, behind the window, when the birds land to get some seeds...

    I reckon it's just frustration.

Hi everyone, my Chatouille chatters too, and I’ve finally realised he does it to complain 😂 I have to admit though, as it’s so weird, it really makes us laugh.

    Good evening

My cats often do this when they spot a bird (I put seeds out for them in the bird feeder). They chatter away with frustration at prey they can't reach. Then the bird flies off and they calm down.

    That’s just life, I suppose.

It’s better for the birds, anyway. I really don't like it when they actually catch one (which is rare, luckily).

    Hi there,

Cats usually make this sort of noise to express frustration. When they see birds through the window, they know full well they can't catch them, but their hunting instinct still drives them to fixate on the prey anyway.

Hi everyone, My cat Fillette, who passed away three years ago now, also used to do a proper duck impression whenever she was at the window. It used to make us laugh so much, but nothing could distract her once she got going. I’m afraid you’ll just have to get used to it! The main thing is to warn your guests so they don't get a shock when they hear a duck coming from your cat... and no, he hasn't swallowed one whole! 😂

    Hi,

Lots of cats do this! Mine does it too (I've tried explaining to her that it’s not exactly the best hunting technique, but she’s not having any of it).

So no need to worry, even if it is a bit odd (and a bit silly, let’s face it), it’s perfectly normal behaviour!

My cat Naya also chatters back at me! I find it so strange!

Our little conversations when we see each other in the evening go like this: "Oh Naya, how are you doing?" She chatters... "Oh, aren't you a good girl." She chatters... "come and have a little cuddle" She chatters!

    Is this normal, Julie?
