My cat is biting her kittens until they cry

My kittens were born on 29th August, so they aren't even a month old yet, and their mum keeps biting them on the neck for no apparent reason. She bites their necks and kicks them with her hind legs; the poor little things can't defend themselves and just cry out. Should I let her carry on? I know she has to bite them a bit as part of their socialisation and discipline, but I don't think this seems like a normal reaction. Can anyone give me some advice? Thanks.

Hi, I’ve got pretty much the same problem, except my cat had three kittens and one has been missing since this morning – we can’t find it anywhere. They’re a month old now, and today she’s started biting one of the little ones until it cries out.

It would be a good idea to call the vet... You haven't answered all the questions... is she in pain anywhere, does she have any milk... is this her first litter?

Call the vet, this isn't normal.

She’s eating kitten dry food and the little ones are too, but no, she hasn’t been to see the vet.

Hi there, No, that’s definitely not normal. They’re far too small, even if they are playing together... has the mother cat been to see the vet since they were born? Is she in any pain? Is this her first litter? Does she have enough milk? Are you giving her food for nursing cats or kitten dry food to make sure she's getting a rich enough diet?

My kittens are either playing together or just sleeping when it happens.

Hi, are the kittens doing anything in particular when the mum acts like this? It’s quite common for her to behave this way when she’s had enough of nursing, for example.

    That is indeed the case.
