My cat copies everything I do

Hi everyone!

So, I've had my cat since he was born; he’s 5 years old now and he’s completely devoted to me. He follows me everywhere, 'talks' to me, and is always demanding fusses. He even waits for me to go up to bed, always sleeps right on top of me, and wakes up at exactly the same time as I do.

And recently, he’s started doing his business at the same time as me! Our loo is right opposite the cats' litter tray, and because I leave the door open, I see him having a wee whenever I’m on the loo.

There are other cats in the house, but he definitely prefers my company.

What do you all think? 😌

Hi everyone, my cat Nyx is 6 years old now and he does pretty much everything at the same time as me. Sleeping, getting up, even going to the loo. When we wake up, we have ‘breakfast’ together; then when I go for a shower, he settles on the bed facing the bathroom and starts his own morning wash. The best bit is on weekend mornings. If I wake up a few times before actually getting out of bed, he lifts his little head, looks at me, and must think “well, if they’re going back to sleep, I am too”. It’s incredibly cute. He lies just like we do, head on the pillow and his body under the duvet. I love my cat <3 To our little fur babies!

    Hi there! :p

I think it’s really cute too, but I was still quite surprised that he goes to the toilet at the same time as I do! 😁

I really don’t think breed affects that kind of behaviour; I used to have a rescue moggy who came from the streets. She was just a kitten when she turned up at our house all by herself. None of the other feral kittens would have ever done that, but she really stood out, and I’ve never known a cat to be so clingy and loving. She used to follow me everywhere, sleep right on top of me, and tuck her head into my neck as she was drifting off. Unfortunately, some people were really cruel to the poor girl – not everyone likes cats, even to the point of hurting them on purpose. She had a crushed paw once, and another time she lost an eye, and it wasn’t caused by an animal... Some people deserve exactly what they give out, honestly.

His mum is a Persian :) and the dad is just a moggie.

Does he have any pedigree genes in his immediate ancestry? Some breeds are known for forming a very intense bond with their humans. They look for exclusivity, like Russian Blues or Siamese cats.

Losing its mother has no doubt made it even more clingy towards you 🙄

    Thanks for your replies,

He was with his mum from birth until he was 3, when she passed away. So he did have his birth mum with him for a good while at least.

To start with, he wasn't a kitten who particularly liked human contact, even though he was born here with us. It was only as he grew up that he really started coming to me specifically. He doesn't like strangers and has a bit of a wild side with other people. He’s a very gentle cat who never scratches or bites, no matter what you do to him. As far as I know, he doesn’t even know how to hunt, and he never goes outside even if the door is left open. On the other hand, he’s always panicked the moment anyone picks him up – even me, haha!

I should also mention that his mum was a pet, but his dad was a feral cat from outdoors :)

It's a common problem with cats that have been hand-reared. My Réglisse has lived with me since he was a week old—bottle-fed and everything. And obviously, he’s very clingy. I socialised him very early on with my rabbit, my parents' dogs, and other cats. He loves them all, but if he has to choose between a nap on the sofa with the rabbit or an uncomfortable nap on my lap, he’ll always pick me. If you don’t work or you work from home, it’s not an issue. If you have to go out, though, it can cause him a lot of stress. He might refuse to eat when you're not there, forget his house-training, or even the opposite—he might hold it in, which isn’t great for him. He might even start pulling his fur out. If he isn’t doing any of that, then there's no problem. But if he shows signs of distress when you leave, you should think about seeing a cat behaviourist. They can help you find ways to dial back that very intense bond he has with you and teach him how to be a bit more independent. He’ll feel much more settled in himself.

    Hi there

I think your cat is psychologically dependent on you; I’ve also got one who’s "afflicted" as well... It’s impossible to leave him alone without him yowling loud enough to wake the whole neighbourhood until I get home, or even move around the flat without him being right under my feet... He’s got access to the roof so he can go for a prowl outside, but if I don’t go up there with him, he won’t go out.
