Leaving my cat alone for 4 days

Hi everyone

I'm thinking of going away for a long weekend from Friday evening until Monday afternoon... but the thing is, I'm feeling really guilty and worried about my little fur baby. Do you think it's okay to leave my cat on their own?

Brilliant! It’ll all go fine. Cats all have their own little personalities, so when you get back, it's possible his behaviour might be a bit different: super clingy, very vocal, a bit sulky... it just depends on the cat. Some react less than others.

Thanks for all your replies everyone. He’ll be visited for at least an hour a day with fresh water and plenty of dry food. The person might even come over to spend an evening at the flat. As for the rest, the flat is all secure.

    Hi there,

You can't just leave a cat on its own! You need a friend, a relative, an acquaintance or a cat sitter. Personally, I've never left my cat and dog with just anyone! I wouldn't leave them with a cat sitter I didn't know, but my dad leaves them with a trusted friend.

To make sure things go well while you're away:

    - Make sure the room or rooms you're leaving them in are safe.

    - Leave plenty of water, especially during the summer.

    - Leave plenty of food too (in several different spots, and make sure another pet can’t steal it).

    - Make sure they have a litter tray so they don't pee everywhere.

    - The person you’ve asked to look after your kitty needs to come round every day for a few hours to top up their food just in case, refresh the water, change the litter, and play and talk to them.

    Hope that helps!

Four days is a very, very long time. Haven't you got any friends, neighbours or family who can pop round two or three times?

It’s true that the heat this summer is making matters worse. But doesn't this smack of a potential abandonment before the July/August holidays...

I’ll say it again, we’re in the middle of a heatwave. The cat will be drinking loads and the water will evaporate too. So, I think it’s essential that someone pops in to check on the cat every day.

    Hi there,

A cat can indeed be left alone for a few days... but only under certain conditions:

    - if it’s a young cat (between 6 and 12 months), they obviously need a safe, cat-proofed room to prevent any accidents. Windows should be properly secured... or kept shut if a sitter is visiting and only opens them to air the room out while they are there.

    - make sure they have safe toys (be careful with small bits that could be swallowed).

    - put out food and water in several different places.

    - provide several litter trays.

    - leave the pet health record and the vet's contact details somewhere easy to find.

    - make sure the person visiting is fully briefed if there are any meds to give.

    - leave a first-aid kit in a cupboard just in case it’s needed (antiseptic like Betadine, eye wash, gauze pads, etc.).

    - let them know where the spare food and litter are stored.

    - make sure they know where the cat carrier is in case of an emergency trip to the vet.

    - and most importantly: find a reliable person who will pop in every morning and evening for an hour or two to sort out the litter and food, but mainly to play with them and talk to them... just like their owner would. Just popping in without any interaction isn't good... they'll feel lonely and need some company! Make sure they have your contact details while you're away so they can reach you if there's a problem.

So there we go... I pet-sit for my neighbours and friends in my building all year round... it’s a real help and it's great for staying on good terms with everyone!!!

    Keep us posted, thanks!

You really need to find a cat sitter who’ll come round for a small fee to feed him, give him fresh water, clean out his litter tray and, if possible, have a bit of a play with him. I did that with my two cats, and they were perfectly fine and just as affectionate when I got back. I could never have even considered leaving them on their own for four days. Besides, a cat on its own gets terribly bored in those situations; they really need those visits from the sitter.

The last time I left my cat alone for just 24 hours, the state she was in when I got back convinced me never to do it again. Having experienced both scenarios—either taking her abroad with me (to stay with family lol) or leaving her on her own—I’d say her reaction is like night and day. I don’t care what people say about cats. When we’re visiting, ‘madam’ explores, doesn't seem at all fazed, and flops down in front of people for a cuddle; basically, she seems very settled. After 24 hours alone, she’d barely touched her food. She clearly wasn’t impressed.

Hi there! It would be better if someone could pop in and check that everything’s okay every day if possible. Leave your keys with someone you trust and make sure there’s plenty of food and water, especially as we’re in the middle of a heatwave right now. It’s absolutely vital to check he’s doing alright, plus it’ll give him a bit of company while you’re away.

    Absolutely not!

Someone needs to come round at least once a day for cuddles, fresh water, and so on. We’re right in the middle of a heatwave!
