Is my cat feeling the chill after being shaved?

Hi everyone :)

I’ve got a long-haired Selkirk Rex, also known as the 'sheep cat'. Last Monday, he went to the vet for a dental cleaning under general anaesthetic, so I took the opportunity to have him shaved because his coat was getting really matted. He’s now completely clipped, very short – you can see his little pink skin underneath.

And since then, I’ve been a total mess. I saw him shivering a bit on Tuesday, and I’ve been overthinking everything ever since. I’m scared I made the wrong call (even though I know it was necessary), and I’m worried he’s miserable. It’s probably completely irrational because he’s eating and drinking fine, behaving normally, and still having his evening zoomies and all that. The only thing that’s changed is that he’s curling up in different spots than usual (which makes sense, he’s looking for warmth). I’ve even fashioned him a little 'jumper' out of an old pair of leggings that I put on him at night.

Anyway, as much as I try to talk myself round—telling myself cats are smart and will find warm spots, and that even if he shivers slightly at times he isn't in a bad way because his whole personality would be different otherwise—I’m still on high alert, watching for the tiniest little tremor.

To be honest, I’m not sure what I’m hoping to get from this post as I think I already know the answers, but has anyone else been through this? Do you have any other points that might help reassure me? He’s not the first long-haired cat to be clipped and the vets obviously know what they’re doing, but I don’t know why I’m reacting like this this time...

Hope you all have a lovely evening!

I’ve got Persians and I’ve had to have them clipped before, even though they go outdoors. When that happened, I only put coats on them for going out if it was freezing. It’s better to do it in the spring if the cat goes out, but if they stay indoors, they aren’t going to catch a chill. To avoid having to get a full shave done at the vet’s, I bought a decent pair of clippers and as soon as I spot a knot or any matting, I clip it off straight away (I have one Persian who is a total nightmare with being brushed). Don't worry, the fur grows back really quickly. That makes sense, thank you. Yeah, if yours were okay going outside after being clipped, I’m sure my pampered boy will be absolutely fine indoors. Thanks!

Evening, yes, of course he’s cold, but there’s not much risk of him getting ill from it. What you should give him is a cosy throw and an old woolly jumper (leggings aren't warm enough). Even better, put an old woolly jumper in a basket or a cardboard box he likes, so that being all curled up in there warms him up faster.
Hi, yes, as for cardboard boxes, I’ve got them all over my flat; I’ve put them in strategic spots for him. I even bought a radiator bed, but of course he hasn't even stepped foot in it yet 😆

    Thanks for your reply.

    Evening,

Yes, of course he’s cold, but he’s very unlikely to actually get ill because of it.

You should give him a cosy fleece and an old woolly jumper (leggings aren’t warm enough).

Even better, put an old woolly jumper inside a basket or a cardboard box that he likes, so that being curled up in there will help him warm up more quickly.
