Is it safe to leave a cat unsupervised with a cone?

Hi everyone! We had our cat spayed yesterday and the vet told us it would be best for her to wear a cone to stop her from licking herself and damaging her stitches. The problem is, the vet advised us to keep her in a quiet room, but the only space we have available is a sort of spare room in the garden. I’m popping in to check on her every 30 minutes, but I was wondering if it's risky to leave her alone while she's wearing her cone. Thanks in advance!

Good evening. I’d suggest giving the vet a ring to get some advice over the phone. It could just be a bit of minor irritation that needs treating with a soothing ointment, and you might need to protect the wound to allow it to heal properly. Keep us posted.

Well, since she stopped licking it once we started using the antiseptic, we decided against using a cone, but the incision is looking a bit red now (it wasn't this morning). It’s been nearly a week since her op and my parents are telling me it’s just the dissolvable stitches coming away as it heals.

Hi there. You could try putting her in a short-sleeved baby grow or bodysuit. It'll protect the bandage and it's much less cumbersome than a cone. Mind you, she still needs to be willing to wear it! A little tip: buy a multipack so you have spares (I had three for the fortnight she had her stitches in). Only do up two of the three poppers so she can still use the litter tray on her own. My girl absolutely loved being dressed up—she acted like a proper little star.

    Hi,

As long as the cat stays indoors, the risk seems very minimal to me.

You can leave your cat alone with their cone. It isn’t a problem at all.

Is there no risk of strangulation?
