Injured nose

Hi everyone, my cat came home yesterday with her nose all damaged and bloody. I've tried to clean and disinfect it as much as I can. She's hardly eating or drinking anything. Does anyone know what it could be?

Hi, I think my cat has the same thing and I’m really worried. I’ve taken her to the vet, but they don’t know what’s wrong with her.

How did things go for you in the end?

Hi there, My cat is also suspected of having calicivirus. Would it be possible to know what treatment you gave yours? Has there been a relapse since then? Also, were their eyes swollen? Thanks for your help.

    Hi there,

I’ve been to the vet and it’s calicivirus, which is indeed contagious. Even though my cat doesn't go outside, one of my others does and must have brought the virus home as a healthy carrier... Check your cat’s mouth for any pink or red patches; mine had loads of ulcers in her mouth... something I didn’t spot straight away... After 20 days of isolation, a course of steroids and essential liquid-style wet food, she’s finally recovered...

Hi, do you have any news on your cat's recovery? I’ve found my cat in the same state today, even though she’s an indoor cat. I have absolutely no idea what could have caused it or how she’s managed to do that to herself... How is your cat doing?

It all depends on the age of your cats. Mine had a wound that looked really nasty; I was cleaning and disinfecting it, but on the day we went to the vet, he ripped the scab off while in his carrier. It bled a lot, and when we got to the vet, he asked how old he was (one and a half). He told us that if he’d been older, he would’ve been worried about a tumour... A new scab is starting to form now and he’s on a course of antibiotics, but it all started with a tiny red scratch, then it became a large wound that almost looked like a burn, followed by big, slightly weeping scabs. It’s been about a week now and he’s doing a bit better, but I’ve just noticed that his sister has a small red patch in the same spot... I’m scared it might be contagious or a tumour...

Hi, I’m not sure if anyone will get back to me, but my cat is in the same state, even though she’s an indoor cat. I have absolutely no idea how she’s managed to do this to herself. Did you ever get an update on your cat, and how was it treated?

Maybe it’s affected their sense of smell :(

    Hi again,

Don’t wait for the wound or the pus to block his nostrils before you act. Cats find it very difficult to breathe through their mouths. A visit to the vet is essential.

    Hi,

I’m not sure if it’s just the way the photo looks, but like @Kikaah, I get the impression the wound is getting worse; it’s weeping and the colour is darker.

Keep a close eye on it. At the very least, if you can, pop into the vet's without the cat but show them the photos. They’ll be able to tell you if an appointment is necessary. :)
