How to tell if my cat has finished giving birth?

Hi everyone!

Let me give you a bit of context!

I was in the shower (I was in there for about 20 minutes) and when I got out I went straight to my bedroom. I knew my cat Nina was expecting! She had been sleeping a lot in my cupboard where my blankets are stored.

So, when I walked into the room, I heard some very high-pitched meowing, so I went to check if she was alright. When I went over to her, I saw she had given birth! To a tiny kitten that’s the spitting image of her! (The meowing was coming from the kitten).

I’ve put a bowl of water and some dry food next to her in case she’s thirsty or hungry!

I just wanted to find out, how can you tell if she’s going to have any more? And how much time is there usually between each kitten being born?

Thanks in advance for your help! If you want photos, I’ll post some!

And afterwards, remember to get her spayed. Constantly having kittens really wears a cat out and she can go back into season very quickly, about 3 weeks later...

A cat can be spayed even while she’s still nursing her kittens.

Hi there.... If she’s lying down and getting up again... and licking her vulva, there’s a good chance she has more kittens on the way. Leave her be, keep an eye on her and just wait...... you can reassure her by speaking softly to her..... don't touch the kittens. The time between each birth can vary from 10 minutes to an hour.

I reckon she’s got another bun in the oven...

Hi, actually, the only way to be certain of the number of kittens is to have an ultrasound at the vet. This should be done before she gives birth, obviously. Keep a close eye on her. If she’s still frantically licking her vulva, it’s likely she hasn’t finished queening yet. If her behaviour has returned to more or less normal and she's completely focused on the kitten, then maybe she only had the one. But then again, without a scan... there’s nothing stopping you from taking her for a quick check-up at the vet’s. She keeps lying down, then getting back up and licking her vulva.

Hi, actually, the only way to be sure of the number of kittens is an ultrasound scan at the vet’s. Obviously, this should be done before she gives birth. Keep a close eye on her. If she’s still constantly licking herself down there, it’s likely she hasn't finished yet. If her behaviour has returned to something like normal and she’s completely focused on the little one, maybe she only had the one. But then again, without a scan... There’s nothing stopping you from taking her for a quick check-up at the vet’s right now.

I see! She is still licking herself, actually! She’s only just stopped; she’s lying down and resting now and the kitten is nursing! Because it's a bank holiday, I can’t call my vet or take her there... that’s why I came straight here!

Hi there, To be honest, the only way to be 100% sure of the number of kittens is to get an ultrasound scan at the vet. This should ideally be done before she starts giving birth, of course. Keep a close eye on her. If she’s still frantically licking herself, it’s likely she hasn’t finished labouring yet. If she’s settled back into her normal self and is completely focused on the little one, it’s possible there was only one. But then again, without a scan... there’s no reason why you shouldn't take her to the vet for a quick check-up now.
