How to tell if my cat has finished giving birth?

Hi everyone!

Let me give you a bit of context!

I was in the shower (I was in there for about 20 minutes) and when I got out I went straight to my bedroom. I knew my cat Nina was expecting! She had been sleeping a lot in my cupboard where my blankets are stored.

So, when I walked into the room, I heard some very high-pitched meowing, so I went to check if she was alright. When I went over to her, I saw she had given birth! To a tiny kitten that’s the spitting image of her! (The meowing was coming from the kitten).

I’ve put a bowl of water and some dry food next to her in case she’s thirsty or hungry!

I just wanted to find out, how can you tell if she’s going to have any more? And how much time is there usually between each kitten being born?

Thanks in advance for your help! If you want photos, I’ll post some!

Hi there! I really didn't know where to turn for more info, so I’ve been searching all over the internet for reliable advice, but I can’t find anything that specifically answers my question. I’m really hoping you might be able to help. Basically, my 9-month-old girl has just given birth (it was an accident; I’d have preferred it if she hadn't got pregnant, but there we go...). It’s her first litter. She had the first baby at 8:20 am, but there’s been nothing since then... I didn't have a scan done, so I have no way of knowing if there are still more inside or not. She’s eating and drinking, cleaning the baby, and nursing; she’s eaten the placenta and everything seems normal. I called a vet but they’re fully booked... and I don't really have the funds to travel further to see a different vet. To be more specific: how can I be 100% sure that there aren't any more babies left? Thanks in advance to anyone who replies. Have a lovely day.

One sign that can tell you if a cat has finished giving birth is her behaviour afterwards. Once she’s delivered all her kittens, your cat will start looking after them, licking them and making sure they’re feeding well. You might also see her go for a bite to eat and a drink to get her strength back. If she still seems restless, there might still be another kitten on the way. If she’s calm, it usually means everything is fine. Have a good evening. Well, I went to check on her before heading to bed! She’s had a bit to eat and drink and is now sleeping while giving them a lick to clean them! Thanks for your replies! Have a lovely evening too ^^

One way to tell if your cat has finished giving birth is by her behaviour afterwards. Once all the kittens have arrived, she’ll start looking after them, licking them and making sure they’re feeding properly. You might also notice her nip off for a drink or a bit of food to get her strength back. If she still seems restless, there might be another kitten still to come. If she’s nice and settled, it’s usually a sign that everything is fine. Have a good evening.

And afterwards, do think about getting her spayed. Having kittens really takes it out of a cat and she can come back into season very quickly, in about 3 weeks... You can actually have a cat spayed while she's still nursing. She’s just had her second baby! She’s sleeping with them now!

Take her to the vet tomorrow to make sure all the kittens are out :)

Yes! That’s exactly what we’re going to do! I’ll call my vet straight away to book her in!

    The second one’s out!!

I don’t think she’ll eat until she’s finished having all the kittens... she can still have some water, though. And definitely don't let the other cats near her, even after they're born... she'll be very protective of her litter and won't want the others seeing them... the cupboard is a great spot for that.

Right, got it! Thanks so much for your help! I’ll keep you all posted on how everything goes!

Hi there.... If she’s lying down and getting back up... and licking her vulva, there’s a good chance she has more kittens on the way. Leave her in peace, keep an eye on her and just wait...... you can reassure her by speaking softly to her..... don't touch the kittens. The time between births can vary from 10 minutes to an hour. Yes, she’s doing that a lot and I’ve kept my other cats away from her! (The others have all been spayed or neutered!) She’s still licking herself and I’ve brought her some food and water!

And afterwards, remember to get her spayed. Having kittens really takes it out of a cat and she can come back into heat very quickly, about 3 weeks later... You can even have a cat spayed while she's still nursing.

Yes! That’s exactly what we’re going to do straight away! We’re definitely getting her spayed!
