Getting my cats' paw prints

I'm looking to get my cats' paw prints tattooed, but I bought a kit that didn't really work very well... Since the delivery times are long and they're a bit pricey, I'm after some other ideas... I've thought about using food colouring? Salt dough? Maybe even mud? But I'm not sure if any of that will work... I also saw that you can scan them, but knowing my cats, that's just not going to happen...

Any ideas?

How many cats do you have? It’s lovely of them to send you a replacement kit, and if it still doesn't work, maybe try using your charcoal powder (perhaps mix it with some water and gelatine to make the mixture a bit thicker). Yes, I’d love to see the result, that’s very kind of you :) I’d also thought about getting my cats' paw prints tattooed, but I decided to go for a simple little black cat instead; I'll get their portraits done when they're no longer with us ^^ Well, to be fair, both kits arrived with the ink half-smeared inside the box; I still tried to use them but the ink just smudged everywhere, so I reckon they were trying to make up for the bad review... Anyway, they're resending my order. And I've got two cats.

Or plant-based ink, it’s made from plants https://www.lecalligraphe.com/encre-vegetale-10-ml-xml-358-999.html

Vegetable ink could be a good shout, I’ll make a note of it in case I really can’t get the hang of the kit.

What about using a charcoal paste instead?

Yeah, I’ve got some powdered coconut charcoal; it leaves a pretty good mark, so I think I’ll give that a go... But the site where I bought the kit is sending me a new one because I explained that the ink had smudged everywhere and I wasn't happy, so they’re sending it as a goodwill gesture. I’ll give it another go then and I’ll post the results here! :)

Yes, organic food colouring definitely exists; I believe it’s plant-based. You can find it online or in health food shops like Holland & Barrett or Whole Foods. Applying it with a brush is a good shout to ensure a thin layer, but I’m not too sure about using spices—it’s probably best to stick to something more neutral. The dyes come as a powder to be mixed with water, but I’m worried it might be a bit too runny... So I’m really not sure how the final result will look....

I’ve just had a thought – what about carbon paper? You know, that thick paper you sandwich between two sheets and it copies what you’re writing? Would that do the trick? Or does it just let the ink through?

You could try using mud or clay, but I don't think it'll be sharp or detailed enough to work for a tattoo. At least with something liquid, it gets into all the tiny details of the paw print, and then you just have to press it onto some paper. You should be able to find something safe at a health food shop, but definitely make sure you read the label carefully—unfortunately, just because something is organic doesn't necessarily mean it's safe for them. Was the kit you used specifically for pets? You might be able to find the same stuff they used in the kit without having to buy the whole thing all over again. Does organic food colouring exist?
