Feeding beef liver to a cat?

Hi everyone!

I have a female cat who doesn't have a very balanced diet since she’ll only eat dry food (she refuses to touch anything else). I've noticed her gums look quite pale, so I suspect she might be anaemic because of her poor diet. I bought some beef liver (the kind for human consumption) to try and gently help with the anaemia and give her a bit of a boost; I offered her a raw piece and, to my surprise, she loved the smell and ate it right up! Can I give her any more? Should I cook it or feed it to her raw?

Thanks a lot!

I agree with @blue, you can't really judge your pet's health without seeing a vet first.

Most cats, mine included, mainly eat dry food and don't have any issues. As already mentioned, you need a high animal protein content and as little grain as possible (mine actually don't digest grain-free food); it should be low in sugar and not have too high a mineral content.

If you notice or think your cat is poorly, you absolutely must see a vet. A change in diet won't fix the problem because it's not necessarily, and likely isn't, the cause of the trouble.

    Evening,

Only a vet can diagnose anaemia. Besides, not all dry food is created equal. If hers is good quality, high in protein and low in carbs, there’s no reason for her to be anaemic.

Hi there! If you want to make sure your cat gets all the nutrients and benefits found in liver, it’s best to feed it raw, but just a heads-up: - If a pet isn't used to raw food, it can give them diarrhoea. - It’s generally not recommended to feed dry food and raw food at the same time (though some animals handle it perfectly well). - For a cat, you only need tiny amounts of liver. For a raw diet, for a cat weighing around 9 lbs (4kg), you’d only be looking at about 6g a day. Liver contains essential nutrients, but having too much of it can cause health issues. If you don’t feel like dry food provides a balanced enough diet for your cat and they seem to enjoy raw meat, you could always try switching them over to a BARF diet ^^
