Ear mite remedies

Hi everyone,

My cat has come down with ear mites for the third time this year. I always manage to clear it up using some ear drops called Otostan which are brilliant! But I’m honestly fed up with it now... So, after doing a bit of digging, I found that I could use Stronghold spot-on as a preventative measure. However, the vet I’m seeing this Saturday (for vaccinations) mentioned Broadline. From what I’ve read, there’s no mention of it preventing ear mites, unless I’ve missed something? I was wondering what you all think about Broadline and ear mites.

Thanks!

    Ange33oce,

Before looking into any prevention, I’d strongly suggest taking some precautions. In particular, it would be wise to figure out how your cat is catching these ear mites.

Since it’s recurring and in such a short space of time, there must be a source of infection that’s recontaminating him as soon as the effects of the treatment wear off.

Giving medication, whatever it may be, is never a minor thing and can even be detrimental to his health.

Is he an outdoor cat? Does he come into contact with other cats, dogs or other animals?

When you treat him, what steps do you take regarding his bedding and your home?

Ear mites are essentially caused by a mite that he’s almost certainly catching from another cat or dog—likely other animals. It would be a good idea to treat them at the same time to wipe out the source for good.

    Kind regards

Good evening, The effectiveness of Broadline against feline mange was evaluated in a study involving 18 infested cats. Success was measured by the reduction in the number of Notoedres cati (the mange mite) found in skin scrapings compared to cats that received no treatment. The study showed the medication was over 98% effective against the mites, with all the animals achieving clinical recovery. It is therefore clinically proven that Broadline works against ear mites; you can use it with complete confidence as a preventative measure as well :) Kind regards, Amélie
