Charity adoption terms and contracts

Hi everyone,

I've started the process of adopting a cat. I’d like to go through a rescue centre or a charity because it’s the right thing to do, but I’m feeling a bit lost with all the adoption requirements and the "vetting" process for potential owners.

I completely understand why they ask for information and why charities want responsible owners, especially given how difficult their work is and the number of animals being abandoned. So, I’m more than happy to provide details like who lives in my home, the type of property, how I've cat-proofed the windows, my experience with cats, etc.

However, I really feel like some of the conditions are a bit over the top.

For example: many charities ask about future plans, particularly about moving house. I don’t plan on moving right now, but it’s definitely possible in the next few years. If I do move, my cat is coming with me. I don’t want an adoption contract to "forbid" me from moving or feel like I have to justify myself just because they want to keep tabs on the cat...

Another example: the right to visit. I’m not at all against a volunteer popping by once or twice after the adoption by appointment. But I can’t commit to allowing a home checker into my house without notice as many times as the charity feels like.

These rescue contracts seem to give the charities an awful lot of power. Plus, there are so many different rescues out there that it’s hard to know which one to go with, especially since they don't share their contracts until the very end of the process.

It’s all quite discouraging; I certainly wasn’t expecting this. :(

What are your experiences with this? Thanks!

Hi everyone, I adopted from a rescue centre and, apart from a form to fill in with a few questions (the size of the house, whether there were other cats, any plans to go on holiday soon and if I was sure I wanted this specific cat, as he’d never been socialised...), I didn't actually get that many questions. I think it must depend on the individual rescue or shelter you go to. I even felt they let the cats go quite easily—I suppose they don't always have the time to look at things on a case-by-case basis, so as soon as they can find a home for one, especially the trickier cases, they don't make much of a fuss.

Hi, I adopted from a rescue and while it’s understandable that they worry about where their animals go, I feel like they go a bit over the top with the vetting process (especially since cases of abandonment or cruelty can involve owners who seemed beyond reproach). As for my experience, I only had one pre-adoption home visit, but the person who came didn’t give me advice—she gave me orders (what litter or food to use, and not to vaccinate because she’d known loads of cats who’d apparently died from the jabs...). When I went to pick up my kitten, the fosterer told me I’d almost been turned down because, when I first went to see the litter, I’d hesitated about taking two and eventually decided on just one because my son (a student who’s not home every weekend) is a bit nervous around cats (and dogs even more so). The thing that bothers me most is that the rescue hasn't transferred the microchip into my name. They say it’s to protect the cat if it’s ever abandoned, but I find it really concerning—if the charity shuts down, I’ve no idea what the protocol is.
