Changing a kitten's name

Hi everyone,

I’d like to know if it’s possible, when buying a kitten (whether they're GCCF registered or not), to change the name the breeders have given them?

Do you have to follow a specific letter for the year (I think it’s G at the moment)?

Thanks.

Ninanou, this post is from... phew, almost 3 years ago! ^^

A pedigree cat (the equivalent of a GCCF registered cat in the UK) is an official purebred. You'll definitely find your answer in other threads =) (try using the search function before asking a question, as you can usually find quite a bit on there).

As for the timing, I haven't got a clue! ^^ But it’s best to start your own thread rather than digging up ones that are several years old =P

    Hi there,

I’m looking to adopt a cat from the RSPCA. His name is Afly, but I’d like to call him Maxie. How long do I have to keep calling him Afly before I can start calling him Maxie?

PS: What is a pedigree cat?

If your kitten is a pedigree, you have to give them a name starting with G (or you can just call them whatever you like regardless of the letter, but they’ll need a name starting with G for their registration papers!). And if they haven't actually learnt their name at the breeder's because the breeder never tried to teach it to them, you don't have to keep the same one :)

Well, G is alright, but some letters are definitely trickier than others when it comes to picking names. :)

    Dellys, I’m interested lol

The letter G isn’t exactly easy to come up with names for; as a breeder, you’ve really got to be creative.

Remix, most of the time I don't give people the choice of name because if you only knew some of the names people come out with.........

Right, I’ve had a reply from the GCCF, and they’ve confirmed what most of you were saying.

Registration with the GCCF can only go ahead if the designated letter for the year is used.

While I’m at it, I’ve got another question:

Is it possible to consult the feline register or the stud book anywhere?

Yes, you can choose the name with the breeder (if they haven't already done so), BUT it will have to be a 'G' name.

It’s just for admin purposes, so on the pedigree papers, it’ll be a 'G'. It’s exactly like my dog born in 2009—he’s an 'E'. The breeder had already picked it out, and I actually ended up keeping the name anyway.

We’re all in agreement that the breeder is the one who has the final say on the name, as they’re the ones who provide the kitten’s pedigree. Mind you, if they’re at all reasonable, they’ll take the trouble to check with me to see what name I’d like for the kitten. That’s not the issue, though. My original question was just to find out if I can give it a name starting with a different letter from the "letter of the year". I’m waiting for a reply from the GCCF and I’ll keep you all posted.

Just to clarify: even if the kittens haven't been registered yet and the pedigree application hasn't been submitted, the breeder is still the sole decision-maker. It’s the breeder who chooses the names for the pedigree (whether the new owners agree or not), which are the names that will appear on the kittens' official papers.
