Cat vomiting 5 days after being spayed

Hi everyone,

This is the first time I've ever posted on a forum... but I really need some reassurance or an explanation...

So, my kitten was spayed on Monday. I went to pick her up that evening; she was a bit out of it, but everything had gone well and she seemed fine. By Tuesday, she was doing much better—still a little groggy, but she was eating, having cuddles, and came back to sleep with us...

When I got back from work on Wednesday, I noticed she hadn't eaten, although she had been drinking. I thought maybe it was just the anaesthetic... but then she was sick. Yesterday was the same; she vomited twice and didn't eat, so I took her to the vet. He didn't really understand why she's vomiting because she looks fairly bright, her stitches are fine, and she hasn't got a fever, but he was a bit concerned. He gave her an anti-sickness jab and an antibiotic injection, and told me to come back today—he said he'd keep her in for as long as needed if things don't improve...

She was sick again last night and this morning too. She still isn't eating and now she's stopped drinking; she's just sitting there staring into space... so obviously I'm taking her back at midday...

I just don't understand why... if anyone has had a similar experience or might have some knowledge about this to reassure me...

Thanks

Yeah, there’s no harm in mentioning gingivitis to them, especially since a diagnosis usually just requires a visual check anyway.

Vomiting is a nightmare, there are so many possible causes :/

Just remember that leaving her at the vet’s is the best thing for her right now; they’ll be able to get her on a drip to rehydrate her.

Hang in there and please keep us updated on how your little one is doing.

Hi, Thanks for getting back to me! To answer your questions, I haven't changed her food yet. I was waiting for her stitches to be taken out and for her to have fully recovered before switching her to special dry food for neutered cats (gradually transitioning from her old food, of course). She hasn't swallowed anything that could have caused a blockage either; we keep a close eye on her, though you can never be 100% sure, so who knows... but we haven't left anything lying around since we've had her. And no, the vet didn't mention gingivitis. I'll bring it up when I take her this afternoon, just in case! Her symptoms are: vomiting, refusing to eat, isolating herself (well, she’s staying on the sofa which is unusual for her), and she’s not moving much (maybe because of the op, but since Monday? That seems like a lot, I’d have thought she would have recovered by now)... I really hate seeing her like this, and I have a feeling she's in pain; it's heartbreaking. I'm so glad you went to see a second vet and that your kitty has recovered!! Thanks again for your reply!

Hi there, I haven't come across this exact situation, but here are the usual questions I ask myself whenever one of my cats is being sick: Have you changed her food since she was spayed? Could she have swallowed something that might have caused a blockage? Did the vet consider gingivitis? This happened to one of my cats; the first vet we saw didn't find anything, and it was only when we went to a different vet two days later that it was picked up (he explained at the time that the pain was so severe it was making her vomit). One injection later and the old girl was sorted. In our case, the symptoms were: vomiting, refusing to eat, lethargy, hiding away, and a "dribbling cat". Best of luck, anyway.
