Cat vomiting 5 days after being spayed

Hi everyone,

This is the first time I've ever posted on a forum... but I really need some reassurance or an explanation...

So, my kitten was spayed on Monday. I went to pick her up that evening; she was a bit out of it, but everything had gone well and she seemed fine. By Tuesday, she was doing much better—still a little groggy, but she was eating, having cuddles, and came back to sleep with us...

When I got back from work on Wednesday, I noticed she hadn't eaten, although she had been drinking. I thought maybe it was just the anaesthetic... but then she was sick. Yesterday was the same; she vomited twice and didn't eat, so I took her to the vet. He didn't really understand why she's vomiting because she looks fairly bright, her stitches are fine, and she hasn't got a fever, but he was a bit concerned. He gave her an anti-sickness jab and an antibiotic injection, and told me to come back today—he said he'd keep her in for as long as needed if things don't improve...

She was sick again last night and this morning too. She still isn't eating and now she's stopped drinking; she's just sitting there staring into space... so obviously I'm taking her back at midday...

I just don't understand why... if anyone has had a similar experience or might have some knowledge about this to reassure me...

Thanks

Hi there, could you let me know what was wrong with your pet in the end? My dog has exactly the same symptoms.

Hi everyone, Yes, some really good news! The vet called me on Saturday evening to say she was doing much better and that she wouldn’t stop crying to come home, so I could go and pick her up!! :) I kept a close eye on her yesterday and she has a follow-up appointment this evening. But she’s doing so much better; she’s eating, drinking, running about all over the place, and waking me up at 4am for cuddles (as usual ^^)! Thanks again for all your support!!

    Hi everyone,

I’ve got a bit of an update: the vet is going to keep her in all weekend as she’s got a bit of a temperature. He reckons she’s had an inflammatory reaction following the surgery, but she’s looking much brighter and is more alert now, and she’s even started eating a little bit again...

I just hope she keeps improving and I can bring her home soon...

With the drip, she should be able to get a bit of her strength back. I can only wish you the best of luck again, and I really hope you get some good news tomorrow.

Evening, just an update: it’s not gingivitis. The vet has put her on a drip and did a blood test. I’ve just had the results back and everything is fine; he thinks she must have had a reaction to some post-op meds, as he can’t see what else it could be. He’s keeping her in overnight and I’ll have more news tomorrow morning. If she’s not doing any better, he’ll be keeping her in all weekend.

Yeah, even if he wants to run more tests, it’s not really a problem for me—financially, I mean. I just want her to get better, but I don't want us to make her even weaker... I'll mention it to him; anyway, even he isn't quite sure what’s causing it...

Yeah, it’s going to be heartbreaking having to leave her there, but at least she’ll be in good hands (hopefully)!

Thanks again everyone, I’ll keep you posted once I’ve been, and then let you know if she has to stay in...
