Cat terrified in his own home overnight :-(

Evening everyone,

For the last three weeks, my cat's behaviour has suddenly changed: he's absolutely terrified in our flat. It all started with some frightened meowing one night when I was away. My partner got up and found him terrified of a small chair cover (one he knows well, he used to sleep on it) that he'd managed to move in front of the TV stand himself. It just seemed funny at the time, but we soon realised there was a real problem.

Since that day, he's been completely different; he's scared of everything in the house as if he's seeing it for the first time (he 'paws' at the throws and slippers, and is really frightened of my scarf left on a chair...). At first, he couldn't even move around; I had to pick him up and put him down in front of his food bowl or whatever, as if he was petrified of walking on the floor. Sometimes he won't go past a certain point (like the hallway) and stays in the same room for hours. He only seems 'okay' when he's up high on the arm of the chaise longue or out on the balcony.

He's constantly scanning the room, moving very tentatively. He's scared of our slightest movement, backing away if I walk past him. It's always worse in the evenings and at night. Sometimes he gets 'stuck' in the living room: he starts meowing and we find him right in the middle, unable to move. So we take him back to the bedroom onto our bed where he sleeps. And then it's the same story all over again; we're woken up by meowing in the night because he wants to get off the bed but he 'can't bring himself to do it'... More to follow in my next post! :-)

    Hi there,

I've been having the same problem with my cat for a week now. Did you find a solution? Is your cat doing any better?

Hi there, many of you might not believe this, but it’s possible that none of this is ‘rational’ and that you have malevolent spirits in your home. This could explain why your cat feels fine at your parents' place but not at yours, and why he’s scared even when you can't see anything. Especially as it happens more often at night. I know some people will think this is ridiculous if you don’t believe in that sort of thing, but if you still haven’t found the cause, then maybe it’s a theory worth considering...

Hi there, Someone replied to my post but I can't seem to read the answer. JUGAMA, could you please get back to me at my personal email address instead: rosacathy28@gmail.com? My cat has been like this for 2 months now. He was hospitalised for 3 days and had a whole battery of tests... but they found absolutely nothing medically wrong. He’s seen 4 different vets in 2 months and they just don't understand it. Have you moved house since then? Was it some kind of "entities" in your home?

Hi jugama, My cat has been behaving exactly like yours for two months now for no apparent reason. Medically speaking, there’s absolutely nothing wrong—we’ve had every possible test done and they all came back clear. Have you moved house since then? Is your cat doing any better? I’ve spoken to an animal communicator who told me that he’s seeing things in the flat, like entities, and that my flat has a negative energy... How did things turn out with your cat in the end, please?

Maybe a noise from the neighbours in the alley outside spooked him while he was settled on the sofa.

Try putting him on your lap and sitting on the sofa, giving him a stroke so he can see there’s nothing to be afraid of.

He might have been put off by a smell; my cats won’t go near mandarins, but they aren’t exactly traumatised just from smelling them.

It happens to me too – I’ll be stroking them and they’ll hear a noise (neighbours, outside, the alleyway) and just bolt.

    Best of luck

    Hi everyone,

Does anyone have any updates following your own cats' issues?

My cat suddenly started behaving like this yesterday; I was gently brushing him on his cat tree downstairs when he suddenly jumped and bolted upstairs.

    One small detail:

I’d put some jojoba oil on my forearms and he was sniffing me just before he got spooked!

For a while, he wouldn't come back downstairs and even did a poo in a corner instead of going to his litter tray. Today he went out into the garden and was really hesitant about coming back into the house. I had to go and fetch him.

He’s staring at our sofa as if there's a monster hiding in it!

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has found out what causes this.

We've tried giving him Bach flower remedies and some CBD oil too! But nothing seems to be working...

Here’s another thought to consider. My little Croquette was shouted at quite nastily by a neighbour. Since then, she’s been incredibly stressed and has started pulling her fur out. I’ve noticed that even the slightest noise terrifies her now. It can be anything from someone raising their voice or something being dropped, to the neighbour yelling, the pipes clanking, or the dishwasher beeping. If she’s asleep and hears an unfamiliar sound, she wakes up and sometimes hides under the sofa. If it happens during the night, she huddles right up against me and I have to stroke her to reassure her. However, I’ve found a little trick that seems to be working, for her at least. When she gets scared, I talk to her to calm her down, saying things like “it’s okay, there’s no one there”, or if I drop something, “it’s alright, it’s just me”, and so on. For now, it’s working. She doesn’t hide under the armchairs anymore, though she’s still very jumpy.

    Hi there 🙂

Have you looked into all the suggestions given to jugama?

Have you been able to see how your cat behaves in a different environment?

How old is your cat and what does the vet say?

Try sending a PM to Jugama; it would be interesting to find out what's happened in the nearly a year since.

Hi everyone, I’m reviving this thread because since this evening, my cat has been behaving exactly the same way you described. Did you ever find out what was causing the stress? I’m so worried about my poor cat; he’s usually such a happy soul but now he’s constantly terrified, even though he’s normally friendly with everyone and isn’t at all timid.

Do you have a thermostat at home? Does your heating come on in the evening when the temperature drops?
