Cat scratching and meowing at the front door

Hi everyone, for a while now my 18-month-old cat has been scratching and meowing at the front door, day and night. We live in a flat, so he's an indoor cat and isn't allowed out. I'm wondering if he wants to go outside or if he's being attracted by the scent of another cat (there are several cats in our block).

If you have any tips, please share them – it's starting to drive me a bit mad! :)

Yeah, mine’s the same, he really wants to go out. To be fair, he used to live in a garden, so that explains everything.

Once he’s had his jabs, I’m going to try taking him out when it’s quiet and there aren't many dogs about.

But then he might want to go out all the time and I reckon he’ll end up meowing even more.

I’ve taken him out on a lead in the hallway very late at night—there are dogs on the floor above. He was so happy, just rolling around on the floor.

I haven't really done it much since as he’s not had his vaccinations yet and I'm worried about him catching something.

He was really meowing today, so I took him just outside the front door for a second while holding him. Because it was during the day, the noises spooked him and he ran straight back in.

You have to expect them to keep asking to go out if they get into the habit, but it’s probably for the best for their wellbeing.

I once met a man who was walking his cat on a lead in the woods. He told me his cat was just like yours; apparently, the main thing is to go out at specific times and let the cat explore at its own pace. At least, that’s what he told me anyway! ^^

No, never - except for when the RSPCA found him! Yes, I've thought about that, but do you think he'll actually stop scratching at the door? Won't that just make him want to go out even more? :D

Has he been outside before? If you fancy it, you could pop a little harness on him and head to the park ^^
