Evening everyone, I’ve had a little male kitten for about a week now; he’s nearly 2 months old (he’s not fully weaned, obviously, as his mum is no longer around). Everything is going more or less okay with my other male cat, who’s 2 years old, but I’ve got a few concerns and I’d like some advice or info, please...

For instance, I don’t understand why my cat grabs the kitten by the throat; he pins him down to do I-don't-know-what, and the little one starts screaming really loudly. Yet, when I check his body and fur etc., there isn’t a single mark on him. Is my cat hurting him, or what’s actually happening?! I’m scared and it’s so distressing when I hear him crying out. I don’t want my cat to injure or kill him!! After it happens, my cat went back to him and gave him a lick... Then everything went quiet again.

Hi everyone, I took in a 2-month-old kitten last Wednesday and my 1-year-old cat keeps grabbing it by the throat and pinning it to the floor. It really gave me a fright when I saw it.

It's true that when you're not used to it like me, it's quite daunting and sometimes looks a bit violent, but I feel much more at ease now thanks to the information you've given me. Thank you so much.

Yeah, it’s completely normal; I had the exact same thing with my kitten. My cat Snoo used to pin him by the neck, and it’s quite shocking to see, but he’s just teaching him some manners. In that position, the little one can’t hurt him anymore and has to stop rabbit-kicking with his back legs. He pins him to the floor just to show him who’s boss. Don’t be worried—my Kouki has grown up to be a lovely big lad, and he’s not a bit of a bruiser anymore like he was when he was a kitten. Back then, Kouki (the little one) would sometimes even hurt the big cat!

It's completely normal; he's just showing him who's boss of the house. He’s basically finishing the socialisation he missed out on with his mum. I know that yelping might sound a bit worrying, but if there's no actual injury, it means the other one isn't really hurting him. If he meant him any harm, he wouldn't be licking him right afterwards. By grabbing him by the throat, he’s just doing what a mum would do to show him that teeth can hurt.
