Hi everyone!

So, my cat, Smoothy, has just come home after spending two nights at the vet's. He had to be catheterised because of a bout of cystitis. The problem is that since we've been back, he's been dripping bits of wee all over the flat. I'm really worried that this might become a habit later on. What should I do to stop my flat from ending up like one big litter tray?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I've spoken to a vet on the phone and they say it's normal...

It’s expected with bladder stones; he’s straining too hard to pee but the stones are blocking him, so that’s why there’s blood. But this isn’t right, it looks like it’s getting worse... Get to an emergency vet, there must be one near you – just search online.

I’ve got a massive problem though, my cat has blood in his urine and none of the vets are open today... I don’t know what to do...

And anyway, if you stop the wet food and replace it with chunks of fresh meat, they’re bound to start eating eventually!

I’d be surprised if they turned down a nice bit of fresh meat.

The problem is that both he and my female refuse anything I give them that isn't wet or dry food...

Okay, that’s good to hear then.

This dry food isn't very good; it contains loads of grains and plant-based sources and very little protein. Cats are obligate carnivores and their bodies aren't designed to process all those carbs! So, giving wet food on top of the dry food is even worse. Keep giving the dry food but stop the wet food, as it’ll only lead to further problems, especially obesity. Instead of wet food, it would be really beneficial to give some chunks of fresh meat to make up for the low protein levels in this dry food. Wet food has a high water content, but it also contains oil, milk, etc., and none of that is good at all.

He’s drinking a lot, so I’m keeping an eye on it. He spends all his time drinking from the toilet; I’ve bought a water fountain and he has an extra water bowl next to it as well. The vet told me it was down to the dry food I was giving him, along with his anxiety and obesity. And I’m giving him wet food as well as his dry food...

    Hi Antonine,

I don't want to worry you, but the little incident your cat had shows that he isn't drinking enough. No matter what dry food you give him, it won't make a difference; it’s simply too dry for him and there's a risk of a relapse. I’d recommend switching to wet food, or at the very least, a mix of both.

    Kind regards

Oh, and I spoke to the vet on the phone last night just for some reassurance. Apparently it’s normal behaviour and he’ll be like this for 48 hours after the catheter.
