As most people probably know, you're not really supposed to give cats tinned sardines.

I know it's a bit of a daft question, but I'm going to ask anyway.

Is it possible to rinse the sardines (with water) and then dry them out?

I hope I haven't shocked anyone with such a silly question!

I'm so sorry.

It all depends on the quality of the tuna, salmon, sardines, or whatever else you fancy... A poor-quality sardine is bad for them, but a top-quality sardine (or top-quality tuna! ;-) ) is perfectly fine... (depending on the antibiotics, hormones, and fish meal they were fed during their lives). Saltwater fish is actually some of the least salty meat you can get... that's why salt is often added to fish-based wet food – it's naturally not salty enough on its own (as well as making it more palatable and helping with preservation)... The worst thing about tinned food is usually the sauce that comes with the fish... just like with food for humans... and any chemical preservatives if they've been added...

You just need to rinse tinned tuna (advice from my vet).

As long as the sardines are plain (no extra seasonings like lemon, tomato or anything like that) and it's only an occasional treat, then it's fine.

Mind you, I personally put the sardines on some kitchen roll first to soak up any excess oil.

The other day I bought some steamed, oil-free sardines. I wasn't a fan myself, but the fur babies absolutely loved them!

Yes, you can give your cat tinned sardines every now and then. You just need to be careful as some budget brands contain a lot of oil.
