5-day-old kittens - how often should they be pooing?

Good evening. I'm brand new here. I really wanted to sign up because five days ago, I found two little orphaned kittens near my house. They were behind a bush right by the side of a road. One of my neighbours noticed them in the morning and came to tell me about them. I went to see them: there were two tiny kittens huddled together. I decided not to touch them, thinking their mum would come back for them. But that evening, it didn't look like she’d returned, and when I went back I heard the kittens crying; one of them had even crawled away from their little nest and was on the edge of the road... Fearing a car might hit them (it’s a busy road), I took the two little kittens home with me. They still had their umbilical cords, which fell off the following morning. Since then, I’ve been looking after them; I refuse to give up on these two little angels. I’ve become so attached to them, but unfortunately, I’m constantly worried. It’s the first time I’ve looked after animals this young. They seem in good shape so far, drinking their milk from the bottle, asking for it when they’re hungry, moving around a lot, and purring when I cuddle them. I’m particularly worried about how often they’re pooing. Yesterday, both my little babies went, but today one of them hasn’t. I’ve been told that a kitten should poo at least once a day—is that true? I asked a vet for advice the day before yesterday and they told me a bit of liquid paraffin could help if they're constipated. So, I went and bought some. I'm planning to call the vet tomorrow anyway to ask, but in the meantime, does anyone know? I should mention they're feeding well on powdered kitten milk and they mew often and loudly (enough to wake me up in the middle of the night for their bottles!). I’m just wondering if the little one might have a problem if he only poos every two days (even though he wees as soon as I massage him with a warm cotton wool pad, and the second kitten has pooed twice today). Your replies and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

    Hello,

It’s a constant worry, isn't it? I just wanted to warn you (as I was in the exact same boat only two months ago) that kittens fed on milk formula never have consistent bowel movements. It’ll just swing between diarrhoea and constipation; personally, it was only once I started her on solid food that she finally started doing proper, firm, healthy-looking poos!

Infant Microlax is indeed very effective, but you should avoid giving it every single day, as it can upset their system and make their bowels 'lazy'.

It’s a truly wonderful rescue you’ve done! Best of luck to you! It’s so tough keeping kittens this young alive, and believe me, you’re in for a few more surprises yet! Mine nearly didn't make it, but she's doing brilliantly now at two months old! I got her at about the same age as yours, and she certainly put me through the wringer!

Good luck and keep us posted!!

Some good news from yesterday: both kittens managed their little poos with no trouble, without needing to use any infant laxatives. They were very small stools, but enough to ease my mind for now. I hope it keeps up! One of them has even slightly opened its eyes... I think I'll have to start cleaning and moisturising its eyes once it's awake, as they were both so good last night and actually let us get some sleep: the result was a good bottle feed, a little clean, and then tucked up nice and warm for a nap.

OK, thanks for the update! You're right, it’s such a worry, and thank goodness you took them in – where would they be now if you hadn't? Don't you worry, you're doing a brilliant job and exactly what needs to be done. You're a super mum! And they look so adorable like that... make the most of it because they grow up so fast! Sending big cuddles to both of them!

Thanks so much! And for the reply. Regarding the little kitten, I contacted the vet yesterday and wanted to book an appointment for around 6 pm because I was worried. However, after asking for some advice over the phone, he told me to try a paediatric micro-enema before coming in to help the little one go. It worked, because a few minutes later he passed several stools (which didn't seem as hard as I’d imagined). I don’t suppose it should be used on a cat every day, though? So, I'm hoping to see him do his business naturally today with the massage and warm cotton wool (which I do after every feed). I've also slightly reduced the amount of milk powder on the vet's advice, as it can cause constipation in some kittens. I’m just waiting to see how the kitten gets on today. They’ve both just had their bottles, drank well, and are now purring against my neck as they fall asleep. It’s such a worry! 🤦

    Hi there,

Well done on those two rescues... that's brilliant!

In theory, a kitten should do a poo every day... missing one day isn't a huge deal, but you don't want several days to pass between poos. You can help by massaging their tummy in a clockwise direction.

Regarding liquid paraffin, yes, it's a solution for occasional constipation, but please be very careful when giving it to make sure it doesn't go down the wrong way!

A check-up at the vet's would definitely give you some peace of mind regarding their general health.

Best of luck and keep us posted, thanks!
