Why is my kitten growling when he plays?

Hi everyone, my kitten is just over two months old. Quite often in the mornings and evenings, when he starts playing, he gets all wound up and starts racing around everywhere, growling as he goes, and if we try to go near him or pick him up, he bolts or tries to bite. I’d really like to know why he gets these ‘mad moments’ and what I can do about them, as I’m worried he might become too aggressive. I do play with him a lot during the day, though. I was actually wondering if it’s because he’s started teething, because when he gets worked up like this, I notice him trying to gnaw on loads of things. Thanks in advance.

Hi there, What you’re describing is completely normal; he’s just having the zoomies, like all kittens do. He’s making little growling noises out of excitement, so there’s nothing to worry about. There is absolutely no need to 'fix it' — a kitten needs to be able to blow off steam as much as they want without any restrictions. Keep playing with him a lot, but just make sure you don't use your hands as toys. Leave out some fabric or foam toys that he can chew on to soothe his teeth. It’s also a good idea to have toys he can chase around available at all times (tinfoil balls, ping-pong balls, etc.). To really wear him out, use a cat feather duster or a fishing rod toy, but never let him bite your hands. You shouldn't try to catch or stop a cat when they’re having a 'mad half-hour'; on the contrary, you should let them get it all out of their system so they properly tire themselves out. He’s just following his instincts, and these bursts of energy just prove he’s in good health...

At the moment, it just looks like the classic mad half-hour! I’d definitely encourage you to keep playing with him, even if he’s being a bit nippy... Kittens need that bit of gentle rough-and-tumble to help them grow up! Ideally, he’d still be with his mum and littermates, as eight weeks is a bit on the young side, but you can certainly make up for it.
