White discharge from my cat's bottom

Hi everyone,

A few weeks ago, my cat's bum was smelling quite strong. I cleaned it with some saline and a gauze pad, thinking he just needed a bit of a clean. It lasted for a couple of days and then went away, but now it's started again. I had a closer look and saw some white liquid coming out, like a bubble. I used another pad to see if more would come out, but nothing. I don't imagine cats like having their bums poked around, and mine really won't let me get near him.

He isn't having any trouble with his poo or struggling to go to the toilet.

Do you know if this is likely to be something more than just needing a worming treatment? Has this ever happened to your cats before?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

My cat is 6 years old and I’ve never expressed his anal glands before. His last visit to the vet was in June.

    The fluid was really white.

    Thanks

Hi there, It could potentially be down to worms, in which case a worming treatment should clear things up. Alternatively, your cat might have swallowed something that's causing mucus. In any case, you should definitely see a vet, especially if you notice any issues with their stools or if they start having trouble going to the loo. Mathilde

    Hi there,

It could be an issue with the anal glands.

How old is your cat? When was the last time their glands were expressed?

White fluid is a bit unusual, though... normally the discharge is brown or beige.

I’d definitely mention it to your vet, just to be on the safe side.
