Twitching leg

Hi everyone, I’m starting to get a bit worried because it’s happened several times now that when my cat is lying down, his back leg starts shaking. It stops when I stroke him. My cat is 10 months old and in very good health; his vaccinations are all up to date, etc. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? Is it serious or is it just normal cat behaviour? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi, I’m having the same issue with my 8-month-old cat. His legs tremble when he’s lying down, even if he isn’t necessarily asleep. He started doing this about two months ago.

Other than that, is he playing, eating and sleeping normally?

Yes, no problems on that front.

I know it’s been quite a while since you posted this, but I’m currently having the same issue with my 6-month-old kitten. He’s in perfect health and isn't showing any other symptoms with his leg. Did you eventually find an explanation, or did it just clear up on its own?

Does he have any itchy parasites? A small injury on his paw? Does he let you feel the whole length of his leg without reacting? If he pulls away when you press firmly, could it be a hidden injury? I’d rule out epilepsy because, in that case, all his legs would be shaking, along with heavy drooling and loss of bladder control. Then again, it could just be a minor nerve issue of no real consequence that will fade over time. Generally, a cat that’s eating, drinking, playing, is still house-trained and isn’t avoiding human contact has nothing much to worry about. Keep an eye on him over the next few weeks to see if it continues.

He doesn't have any parasites or injuries, and besides, he’s an indoor cat. He lets me touch his leg without any trouble at all. I’ve noticed this happening at least four times now. I really hope it’s nothing serious.

Could he have some itchy parasites? Or maybe a little injury on his paw? Does he let you feel all the way down his leg without reacting? If he flinches or pulls away when you give it a proper feel, it might be a hidden injury. I’d rule out epilepsy, as in those cases all four legs would be shaking, along with heavy drooling and losing control of his bladder. Mind you, it might just be a minor nerve twitch that isn't serious and will settle down over time. Generally, if a cat is eating, drinking, playing, using the litter tray and doesn't mind being handled, there’s usually nothing much to worry about. Just keep an eye on him and see if it persists over the coming weeks.

Hi there, is your cat asleep when his paw twitches? If that’s the case, he’s probably just dreaming – likely about being out on a hunt. When you stroke him, he wakes up and stops dreaming and twitching. During REM sleep, cats often move about and make little chewing motions as if they're eating, because they're dreaming of tucking into a massive mouse...

Hi, thanks for your reply, but unfortunately no – his paw shakes while he's wide awake :/.

    Hi there,

When you stroke them, they wake up, so they stop dreaming and the twitching stops.
